"Although David began Psalm 16 feeling very troubled, he ends it feeling full, abundant, and overflowing with joy because he experiences God nearness. And he has the hope that one day he will actually be in His presence, face to face with God forever.

What does this psalm mean for us today?
How can I experience joy when I'm in distress?

Here's our answer. Like David, I can move from feeling troubled to being joyful when I know and experience Him as my refuge, my treasure, and my Lord, both in His nearness now and in the hope of His presence forever.

We can know that God is our Lord, and we can fix our eyes on Him, surrendering as He guides and counsels us.

His presence is our good.
His nearness is our good.
His nearness calms our fears, gives us patience in our waiting, comforts us in our lamenting, satisfies our longings, gives us contentment, and brings us joy."

"Your nearness is my good." (Psalm 73:28)

When life feels uncertain, where do you run for security, peace, and joy?

In Psalm 16, David reminds us that true joy isn't found in perfect circumstances—it's found in the presence of God. Like a child running to hear her mother's voice, our hearts find rest when we know God is near.

God is not only our refuge in trouble, He is our greatest treasure. When we experience Him as our refuge, our treasure, and our Lord, we can move from fear to joy, even in seasons of suffering.

On today's episode of Revive Our Hearts, we're joined by Missy Schrader, one of the two beloved daughters of Robert Wolgemuth. Not long before Robert's passing in January, Missy shared a powerful message from Psalm 16 with the women of her church—a message filled with biblical wisdom, hope, and a deep love for the Lord.

"Yes, we can abide in Jesus when the house is calm and when all seems well in our world. But we can also abide in Jesus when we spill coffee on our clothes, when we’re running late for the next meeting, or when we run out of gas on the way to school drop-off.

We can abide in Him when our house feels too small for our growing family, when a friend disappoints us, or when a storm floods the basement.

We can abide in Him when our toddlers seem bent on disobedience, when we feel stuck in a conflict with our spouse, or when our attitudes seem fixed in complain mode.

Firmly rooted in Jesus’ love and His Word, we continue to obey Him right in the middle of the chaos. Right here, right now, we can—and must—abide in Jesus. Abiding in Him might not make our lives calm, but it will do something even better: it will fill us with His joy (John 15:11)."

"There are a lot of places we often turn to for light and direction—friends, books, podcasts, pop culture, our own experiences, and our own opinions. But to whatever extent these sources are not rooted and grounded in Christ, they will all prove to be faulty guides sooner or later.

So come into His presence. Dwell in Him. Seek His face and His will. Make this a way of life.

David was living life with real enemies, real battles, and real circumstances. In the midst of all that, he says, 'This is the life—the lifestyle—I want to have!'

He finds in the Lord safety and security. He wasn't promised a life free from trouble; rather, he was promised security and safety even in the midst of trouble.

Choosing that lifestyle now of dwelling in the house of the Lord is what we’re going to spend eternity doing—gazing upon His beauty and learning the wonder, the never-ending wonder, of His beauty, His wisdom, and His grace, as we make never-ending discoveries for all eternity!

So let’s do that now."

Sometimes hope feels like it's hard to find. Our circumstances feel overwhelming and we're desperate for God to shine light on the darkness of our lives. But what if hope is a lot like a tiny piece of broken glass?

Here's Laura Elliott ⬇️

"It’s like when you drop a glass on a hard tile floor and the whole thing shatters. You sweep up the pieces—large, angry shards and small, fragile fragments. You think you’ve got it all until—out of the corner of your eye—you spot it: the slightest sparkle peeking out from between two tiles.

You nearly missed it (the light has to hit it just right to be seen) but now it’s undeniable: the smallest glint of light reflecting off of a tiny piece of broken glass.
It was there all along."

🙏 Thank you, Lord, for glimmers of hope in dark places. Thank you for preserving our faith when we walk through dark valleys. And thank you, Jesus, for so great a salvation that we can bank our entire existence on Your faithfulness, on Your victory, on Your love. In Jesus name, amen.

“David is a king. He’s the CEO of the nation. He’s the commander-in-chief of the military forces of Israel. Yet they’re all in a desperate place. All around him are powerful enemies and relentless opposition.

And in this desperate place, David lifts his eyes to the Lord. He doesn’t talk to his enemies; he talks to the Lord. And he has just one request to ask of the Lord.

Think about him. He’s a powerful man. He has a lot of contacts. He knows a lot of people. He has a lot of resources at his disposal. So if he has just one request, what do you think he might ask for? Victory over his enemies? An effective battle plan? For God to make his problems go away? A way to escape his problems?

What would you have asked for if you were in his position?

David says:
‘One thing have I asked of the LORD,
that will I seek after:
that I may dwell in the house of the LORD
all the days of my life,
to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD
and to inquire in His temple.’

He says, ‘This is the number one priority of my life.’ This is the one thing he will earnestly seek and pursue, the one thing on which he will focus his efforts and attention.

He’s saying, essentially, ‘Lord, if You don’t give me anything else, please give me this one thing...to live in the presence of the Lord.’”

No matter what you’re facing, true confidence and peace aren’t found in changed circumstances, but in drawing near to the Lord!

Every podcast, article, broadcast, Bible study, and devotional exists to help women walk faithfully with Christ through every season of marriage, motherhood, womanhood, and even suffering—anchored in the truth of God’s Word and expectant for Him to do something beautiful.

And real change is happening.

McKenzie Skidmore’s story is a beautiful picture of that kind of transformation.

As she began treasuring God’s Word more deeply, her husband, James, watched that truth overflow into every part of their home. He saw her growing love for Scripture strengthen their marriage, shape her motherhood, and inspire their whole family to hide God’s Word in their hearts together.

This is what happens when truth takes root: God’s grace doesn’t stop with one life. It spills over to bless many others.

That’s why the work of Revive Our Hearts matters so deeply.

Women around the world are discovering that a full life in Christ is not found in striving for more but in faithfully walking with Him day by day.

As our fiscal year comes to a close on May 31, your partnership can help extend that hope to even more women and families. We are close to 50% funded and could use your help to meet our $1.4 million goal!

In today's episode of Revive Our Hearts, be encouraged as you hear the stories of three women who’ve navigated some choppy waters in their marriages and how the Lord gave them strength, grace, and wisdom.

All this month our emphasis has been on the freedom, fullness, and fruitfulness we find in Christ. There’s a special kind of fruitfulness that comes when we persevere, when we endure something hard. The women we’ll hear from today can attest to that.
