History

This is the Annual celebration of the Emancipation and the Homecoming of the Nicodemus descendants. This began in the summer of 1878 and continues to present day. Historically, there would be political speeches, orations, as well as musical performances. Horse races and foot races would prevail as youth and men would test their strength. For years the event was held down in the ‘grove’ southwest of Nicodemus, but eventually was moved on site where it remains today. Even though there are links to the past celebrations, it is now about a ‘Homecoming’ of descendants who gather and reconnect with their roots.
