Time to fly into another Wildlife of the Week as we highlight the insectivorous bat! Bats are a unique species that are found on every continent, with the exception of Antarctica. They’re usually found in large social groups in caves, trees and man-made structures like bridges. Bats may be able to fly but they aren’t birds. They are the only mammal that are truly capable of sustained flight! Since they’re mammals, bats have hair on their bodies and usually only give birth to one offspring at a time. Bats are amazing athletes that can catch flying insects with their mouth, wings and even their tails! Bats are native to Oklahoma and primarily found in the western half of the state. The OKC Zoo is home to a colony of bats that you can see flying around in their habitat at the Nocturnal Barn in Oklahoma Trails!
