Social workers deserve compensation that reflects their education and training, and the critical support they provide. NASW is proud to be the lead supporter of the bicameral, bipartisan Mental Health Access and Provider Support Act, currently before Congress. This bill would increase Medicare reimbursement for clinical social workers from 75% to 85%, helping reduce financial strain, sustain the workforce, and strengthen access to care nationwide. is supporting a multi-state lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Education regarding restrictive federal student loan limits for advanced degrees. This policy is expected to reduce access to critical funding and exacerbate provider shortages. For more details, visit NASW News Releases at socialworkers.org. “We proudly stand with this coalition of states to ensure that dedicated future clinical social workers can afford the education required to provide essential, life-saving mental health care across the nation,” NASW CEO Anthony Estreet, PhD, MBA, LCSW-C, said.

Vermont’s Senate has advanced a bill that would ban AI chatbots from diagnosing mental health conditions or creating treatment plans. The measure advances as states begin setting rules around AI use in healthcare. “It calls itself wellness (but) if it quacks like a duck, walks like a duck, it’s a duck,” said Lynn Currier of the National Association of Social Workers Vermont Chapter, warning that some platforms are blurring the line between wellness and clinical care. The bill does not restrict therapists from using AI for administrative tasks. Scheduling appointments, handling billing, and transcribing sessions all fall outside the prohibition.
