We have some exciting news! Your gift to KyUMH may be eligible for a matching donation from your employer.

Many companies offer matching gift programs that can double, or even triple, your donation to nonprofits, including KyUMH. That means more support for children, youth and families who rely on our programs and services.

Checking if your company is eligible is simple. Contact your employer's human resources department or search for your company on our online donation page.

Your generous support already makes a difference. A matching gift is an easy way to extend that impact even further. Thank you for helping us create brighter futures for youth all across Kentucky.

TODAY IN KYUMH HISTORY: June 15, 1931 - Move to Versailles

The KyUMH “family” of 56 children and a small staff moved from Louisville to a spacious farm in Versailles, Kentucky. On the property were three brick buildings, formerly the Woodford School, which were converted to housing, offices, dining and kitchen areas, and a library.

Versailles became KyUMH's home for the next 86 years. At its height, we housed 100 kids on that property! We are grateful for that space that allowed us to serve children and youth that needed a place to stay and get the support they need.

The property is now Frontier Nursing University and our headquarters today is located in Nicholasville.

Youth helping youth đź’™

We were grateful to welcome West End UMC and Adventure Serve to our Nicholasville Campus for a day of service and learning. They helped us create a visual of 2,486 felt chains connected together to represent the number of youth we served in 2025!

They also toured our Residential Treatment program and got a glimpse into what daily life looks like for a young person in foster care when they arrive on campus.

Additionally, they wrote encouraging notes to the youth we serve as well as our staff. When youth show up for youth, it creates compassion and hope for the future.

Thank you to everyone who visited and using your time to show up for the youth we serve.

Meet Melissa "Issa" Brown. Our new Vice President of Advancement. 🎉💙

Melissa Brown joined KyUMH in 2021 as the Director of Donor Relations. Prior to KyUMH, Melissa spent 10 years in the nonprofit world, empowering and lifting up people in her community. We are grateful for her dedication and compassion for Kentucky's youth and families and are excited for this new chapter.

From Melissa:

"I am elated to serve as your new Vice President for Development at the Kentucky United Methodist Children's Homes. I care deeply about creating a world in which children and families thrive. I’ve seen first-hand just how interconnected the needs of children and families are. Solutions exist for our children, youth, and families if we are willing to claim them.

KyUMH is at an exciting time in its history—one that I think its original founders would be proud of. I am honored to be a part of this legacy—a legacy that exists not for itself, but for the benefit of children, families, and our communities. I’m grateful for the support of our Board, and I am excited to work alongside our leadership, staff, and supporters to advance KyUMH into the future!"

This past week, we joined our friends at the Kentucky Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church. We connected in fellowship and praised God for what He has done in Kentucky.

We also celebrated our 155th birthday with cupcakes and party favors. We are so grateful for the churches and supporters over the years who have uplifted our ministry and played a part in bringing hope to Kentucky’s children and families.

Thank you to everyone from Kentucky Annual Conference who said “hi” to us. Until next year!

Today, we are celebrating Carla Barr, who has worked at KyUMH for 40 years 🎉💙

“There have been a lot of changes over the past years," says Carla, "In my role, at Mary Kendall, with KYUMH. There have been times that I wondered how long I would actually really stay. But here I am still, and I have not ever regretted my choice to stay."

In 1986, she started at Mary Kendall as a house parent. Then she was promoted in 1989 as a supervisor.

Fast forward to September of 1994, Carla is hired as the Mary Kendall Campus Director. For 23 years, she looked over Mary Kendall's programs and services, making an impact on the Owensboro community.

Then in 2017, she became the VP of Compliance and Quality Management, which she still does today.

"I love my job!" says Carla, "I have never really thought of it as a job…but something I get to do every day."

Here are some kind words from Carla's work family that she has known over the years:

"It is impossible to imagine KYUMH without thinking of Carla. Through her dedication, wisdom, and hard work has helped shape KYUMH into an agency that continually grows and improves. The success and reputation of KYUMH today are due in no small part to Carla’s work and dedication over the years." -Robin Campbell, VP of Finance & HR

"Carla has been a steady presence at KYUMH for an amazing 40 years! Her knowledge, experience, and impact can be felt everywhere—particularly on the Mary Kendall Campus. We’re so thankful for the leadership and guidance she brings, along with the fun and energy she adds to everything she does." -Barbie Estes, Executive Director of Programs & Services

"She has been an asset to this Home and the mission. She still gets excited when you ask how things were in the early years of Mary Kendall. She has made a difference in the lives of many children and staff either directly or indirectly through her leadership. Forty years in this field takes a very special person. Thank you Carla for your 40 years of service to the Home." -Roy Hicks, Director of Campus Operations

Did you know? A piece of cake 🍰 can mean so much to our high school graduates.

For young people in foster care who have experienced trauma, milestones like graduation represent more than a ceremony. They represent resilience and hope. đź’™

Shannon Gillespie, Clinical Director of our Out of Home Care (OOHC) programs, shares her experience watching our youth change the tassel on their cap. And with that, changing their lives.

Your support makes high school graduations possible! 🎓
