Twenty-five years later, we still remember the day that changed our nation forever.
On September 11, 2001, 2,977 innocent people lost their lives in the terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
Among them were 343 members of the FDNY, along with police officers, EMTs, and countless other brave first responders who ran toward danger while others were running away.
As firefighters and first responders, we understand the call to serve. We understand putting on the uniform, answering the alarm, and stepping forward when someone else needs help. The men and women who responded that morning showed the very meaning of courage, sacrifice, and service.
But today isn't only about the towers, the smoke, or the tragedy.
It is about the people.
The husbands and wives.
The mothers and fathers.
The sons and daughters.
The brothers and sisters.
The friends, coworkers, and neighbors.
And it is about the first responders who never made it home.
We remember those who were lost. We honor those who answered the call. We stand with the families who continue to carry that loss. And we remember the responders and survivors whose lives were forever changed by the events of that day.
From our firehouse to the families and departments who continue to carry the memories of September 11:
We remember.
We honor.
We will never forget.
