"No one is born ‘in the closet.’ It’s something we construct for ourselves … to hide those parts of ourselves that we feel might cost us something.”

For many aspiring lawyers, there's a disconnect between what they know about themselves and what society has shown us about how lawyers should look, sound, and behave. This Pride Month, LSAC's Kirk Walter is reflecting on what it means to belong — in law school, in the legal profession, and in the world.

Kirk challenges the idea that you must keep parts of yourself hidden to be worthy of opportunity or to belong. Your voice, perspective, and lived experience are not distractions from the work of law. They are part of what makes it possible.

This Pride Month, we're celebrating belonging and acceptance for those in all stages of their legal education journey.
