WHAT IF learning could look like this?

Curious about homeschooling but not sure where to begin? Wondering what “unschooling” actually means in real life? Interested in learning how Open Connections fits into the landscape of educational choice?

This event is designed to be a welcoming, low-pressure introduction for families exploring alternatives to conventional schooling. We’ll share an overview of homeschooling in Pennsylvania, unpack the philosophy and practice of unschooling, and offer a clear look at how Open Connections supports young folks and families within that framework.

You’ll hear about the range of programs we offer, and the ways this philosophy nurtures curiosity, and how the community support offers meaningful connection. There will be plenty of time for questions, conversation, and honest discussion about what this path can look like! We will talk about it all, including both the freedom and the responsibility it brings.

Whether you’re just beginning to explore homeschooling or already on the journey and looking for community, this session is a chance to learn, connect, and imagine what’s possible.

Our Explorations program is extra tasty this Fall! Explorations A has been experimenting with "Fancy Food." This week, they made gluten-free waffles and vegan pancakes, and practiced their plating and presentation. They cooked up some caramel drizzle and blueberry compote to accompany their creations. Piped homemade whipped cream and fresh sliced fruits adorned the finished dishes.

Not familiar with our Explorations program? Explorations meets on Wednesdays, and the day itself consists of a morning topic and an afternoon topic separated by time to eat lunch, socialize, enjoy the outdoors, and play a game or two. Two topic areas are explored every eight weeks and typically utilize a variety of campus resources including the Makerspace, Woodshop, kitchens, Art Studio, and our 28-acre grounds. By the end of the year youth will have explored eight different offerings providing exposure to a variety of topics, tools, and activities. Finally, because we recognize the richness and value that vertical age groups provide, each program spans multiple years.

Each Explorations program is scaled to meet the developmental, social, and academic needs of the youth, with Explorations A serving as a building block for the more complex content and increased self-direction and accountability for teens in Explorations B.

There you have it! Our first week of 2026-2027 is officially in the books!

There was a lot that was JAM PACKED into those first few days: new and familiar faces, new adventures and old traditions, and of course, countless big laughs!

But if there is one thing we have learned about starting a new year at Open Connections, it is that we never really know exactly where the journey is going to take us. We have some plans, of course: games, projects, and activities. There will also be unexpected discoveries, spontaneous adventures, new friendships, hard things, funny things, and plenty of moments that none of us could have planned even if we tried our hardest! And honestly, we simply can't wait to see what unfolds.

Here's to another year of learning, growing, exploring, connecting, and figuring things out together.

And then, of course, there is the campus itself.

There is something uniquely special about watching the whole 28 acres of campus come back to life after a summer slumber. Paths are wandered, trees are climbed, gardens are checked on, creatures are discovered, and all the familiar little corners, nooks, and crannies of campus start filling up with friendly faces again.

We can definitively state that there were, in fact, many muddy feet, countless grass stains (sorry!), sticks collected for *very* important purposes, bugs admired, and so many moments of awe at the natural world around us.

We feel pretty lucky to have a place where there is so much room to wander, wonder, make, explore, and grow! And we're even luckier to get to watch these young folks make this place their own, year after year.

There were things to make, to investigate, to figure out, to try, to revisit, and of course, to tinker and play with! Overall, we witnessed even more curiosity in these young folks than we could have dreamed of.

It was a pretty wonderful reminder that learning at OC can take a lot of different shapes, and that when there is room to follow curiosity, we never quite know what magic might happen next.

We're looking forward to another year of that magic.

All the exploring and... there were also moments that are a little harder to articulate in a short post: new conversations, old friendships that picked right back up where they left off in June, someone inviting another new friend into a game, shared laughs, curious questions, a little support from a friend when something felt tricky. It was all of those spontaneous, unexpected moments that happen when a whole bunch of folks come back together and start finding their rhythm on campus and in program again.

There has been so much of that happening throughout the community last week and we couldn't be happier to be back in this beautiful, messy, and wonderfully unpredictable practice of learning and building community together.

We had such a wonderful first week together! Some of the excitement that happened during our first week: film clips were artfully composed, chicks hatched, crafts were constructed, campus was explored, paintings were rendered, even more caterpillars were spotted, trees were climbed, buntings were sewn, and this is just scratching the surface. We are so grateful to be back together!
