On October 1st, we had the pleasure of welcoming Marcela Uribe from Main Street America to Newton for our biannual visit!

Marcela spent the day learning more about the exciting work happening in Downtown Newton and meeting with local leaders and volunteers. We had the opportunity to talk about several of our current and future revitalization projects, including facade improvements, Street Escape, 2nd story living rehabilitation, and legacy plaza green space.

These visits are a great opportunity to share the progress we’ve made, discuss challenges and opportunities, and look ahead at ways we can continue to strengthen and enhance our downtown.

Our Main Street program is built on the dedication of our volunteers, board members, community partners, and local leaders who continue to invest their time and energy into making Downtown Newton a place we can all be proud of.

Thank you, Marcela, for spending the day with us and for your continued support and guidance as we work to preserve the history, invest in the future, and develop pride in our downtown district!

🎉 Main Street Iowa has announced the five finalists for the 2026 Open 4 Business pitch contest! Keep an eye out for Newton's own Fuego Hot Glass ❤️

On October 5, five small businesses from Main Street communities across Iowa will pitch their plans for growth and expansion, competing for up to $25,000 to help bring their projects to life.

Meet this year’s finalists:

Clarence: Demeter's Market
A bakery specializing in cheesecakes, sourdough, pastries and catering. Owner Torrey Wilhau hopes to add commercial kitchen equipment to increase production, take on larger catering orders and expand into restaurants, grocery stores and eventually a food truck.

Styled Abode | Elkader
A home goods and gift boutique featuring thoughtfully sourced decor, books, fragrance, art and more. Owner Rebecca Dempster plans to move into a larger downtown storefront and expand into women’s clothing and accessories.

Bloomers on Central | Fort Dodge
A longtime coffee shop serving specialty drinks, baked goods, breakfast and lunch. After recovering from a devastating flood and reopening in a new downtown location, owner Rebecca Reitmeier hopes to improve equipment, technology, outdoor seating and programming as Bloomers grows into an even larger community gathering space.

The Purple Wagon | Marion
A children’s boutique offering clothing, toys, books, gifts and essentials for babies and kids. Owners Karlee Peters and Danielle Frein recently moved into a much larger historic storefront and hope to expand inventory, displays, technology and advertising.

🔥 Fuego Hot Glass | Newton
Owned by Jonathan Petkosek and Mary Tiso, Fuego Hot Glass offers hands-on glassblowing classes, demonstrations and handcrafted artwork. Funding would help add a second annealer and new equipment, allowing Fuego to increase capacity and expand into additional glass art classes and group workshops.

We’re SO excited to see Newton represented by Fuego Hot Glass and wish Jonathan and Mary the best of luck as they take the stage In Osceola on October 5! 🏆❤️‍🔥
