Newton, the proud county seat of Jasper County, is a thriving community. Our centrally located, historic downtown defines our character and culture. Downtown Newton is a visually stimulating showplace and a vibrant district with diverse shopping, dining, living and entertainment. A cohesive design plan and complementing financial incentives encourage property owners to invest in their buildings an

d respect a balance between downtown’s historic integrity, modern elements and improvements. A recently completed downtown streetscape incorporates sustainable practices, honors our community’s history and enhances downtown as our central gathering place. Newton Main Street is the hub for communication, community buy-in, local partnerships and strong local leadership. A clear, implementation-oriented plan continually shows progress and demonstrates success. A full calendar of multi-generational activities provides a mix of retail and special events that draw residents and visitors day and night. Each year our signature downtown event highlights the best our community has to offer and builds upon our strong downtown image as a hometown community with a base of diverse entertainment options. New quality downtown living opportunities offer live-work space, market-rate, and affordable upper floor residential options. Downtown residents, visitors, and local citizens support locally owned businesses and restaurants. Local business resources support independent entrepreneurship, help maintain anchor businesses, like our locally owned theater, and aid in the recruitment of destination business opportunities. Downtown Newton is distinctively different and a perfect opportunity to get to know Newton.

💐✨A HUGE thank you to the amazing volunteers who helped plant flower pots throughout the district!

On May 6, volunteers from WEST Academy High School helped bring color and life to our community, and on May 11, we were joined by Farm Credit Services of America to continue the work!!

We are so grateful for the time, effort, and community pride these groups shared with us. These flower pots help make our district more welcoming and beautiful for everyone to enjoy!

A special thank you as well to Linden Grove Greenhouse for the beautiful flowers. 🌷

Thank you to everyone who helped make this project possible!!

Last night, Main Street Iowa/Iowa Economic Development Authority celebrated 40 years of strengthening downtowns, honoring communities, and recognizing outstanding leaders across the state.
We are proud to share that Newton Main Street received two incredible honors during the celebration.

Congratulations to Craig Armstrong for receiving the Leadership Award. Your dedication, vision, and commitment to our community continue to make a lasting impact in Newton.

We also congratulate Gray Moon Public Market for receiving the Building Rehabilitation Award in the community population category of over 5,000. This transformational project, led by developer Jerry Schwaller, is a wonderful example of investment, preservation, and revitalization in our downtown district.

“Celebrating Main Street Iowa’s 40th anniversary at the 2026 Main Street Iowa Development Awards honored the legacy of those who first embraced the Main Street Approach™ while highlighting the successes of today,” said Carol Lilly. “The milestone provided an opportunity to reflect on the program’s strong foundation while looking ahead to the future of downtown revitalization across the state. It also underscored the continued momentum of the Main Street movement and the shared commitment to building vibrant, resilient downtowns for generations to come.”

We are honored to celebrate these achievements and grateful to everyone who continues to support and believe in the future of downtown Newton .
