Last week, we were joined by local taxidermist Shane Jansen for our February fishing club meeting. Shane gave us a behind the scenes look at how a trophy fish is brought back to life in the form of a replica or skin mount. We were all blown away by Shane's talent and attention to detail! At the end of our meeting, Shane quizzed the group on some Iowa fish facts and three of our members walked away with some sweet prizes, including a $50 gift card to Shane's shop.

Thank you to Shane, with Jansen Taxidermy Studio , for presenting to our group!

Our first ever ice fishing trip is in the books and it was nothing short of amazing! Last weekend, thirty-six of us made the journey north to chase yellow bass on the ice. Our club teamed up with Lucas and Aaron with Legends Guide Service to make the trip happen and they were absolutely amazing! Thanks to their extensive knowledge and hard work we were able to keep everyone warm and on fish the entire day. Both the kids and adults learned a ton about jigging techniques, lure presentations, and how to locate fish during the winter.

In total, our group ended up keeping SIX HUNDRED yellow bass. This gave us ample opportunity to teach the kids how to filet fish when we returned back to camp Saturday night. We ended our day with a delicious fish fry where we shared stories from our unforgettable day on the ice.

We are so grateful to everyone who helped make this trip a success. Thank you to Julie Bak and Al Lundberg for allowing our club to stay in your home. Thank you to all of the parents who helped chaperone this trip. Thank you to Robin Hansen and the Leonard's for donating food for the crew. Thank you to Lucas and Aaron for guiding our group on the ice. Last, but certainly not least, thank you to all of our amazing sponsors for making this trip possible for these kids Spire Property Management Iowa Magnum Automotive Megan Meyer Otto Law Office, PLLC Johnson Family Farms Runner Seed Bespoke Builders.

What a fun day on the ice with this group! With a break in the weather, we decided to offer a pop up ice fishing event yesterday afternoon. Thirty people showed up to try their luck on the ice and most of the kids found success hauling in some slab crappies and dandy bluegill. It never gets old seeing those big smiles! Thank you to Cindy and Gayla for having us out!

Although the weather hasn't panned out for any hardwater fishing with our group recently, we were able to talk all things ice fishing at our January meeting.

Over forty kids and parents gathered at the Newton Izaak Walton League on Monday night. We covered ice safety, basic gear and tackle, and how to locate fish through the ice. The club also got to see a custom Smitty sled design built by Craig Weier.

To wrap up the evening, several members learned how to properly spool new line onto a spinning reel. Forty-nine new rod and reel ice combos were purchased for the club thanks to a grant provided by the Izaak Walton League of America Endowment Fund!

We had another great turnout for our December meeting at the Newton Ike's. Over 50 kids showed up to learn how to tie custom marabou and bucktail jigs. Thank you to all of the wonderful parents who helped out on Monday night!

Programs like this wouldn't be possible without the support of our amazing sponsors. Thank you Spire Property Management Iowa, Megan Meyer, Magnum Automotive, Runner Seed, Bespoke Builders, Otto Law Office, PLLC and Johnson Family Farms.

It was a full house for the November JCYFC meeting with over 50 kids in attendance! For this month's meeting, the kids learned how to build their own spinnerbaits. Each member learned to powder paint and assemble the baits using a variety of different blades and skirt material.

Thank you to our sponsors for making this event possible! Megan Meyer, Magnum Automotive, Spire Property Management Iowa, Johnson Family Farms, Otto Law Office, PLLC.
