We usually just toss these mailings in the recycling bin, because we're not going to spend your generous donations on a plaque that hardly anyone will see. But we realized maybe we should tell you about them and offer some thanks. These awards are based on Google reviews. So thank YOU for taking the time to give us that positive feedback! Furthermore, we frequently have the pleasure to interact personally with staff from almost all of the other organizations on this Top 10 list and can verify that they are all bighearted, dedicated professionals. Newton is blessed with many nonprofits whose only goals are for the betterment of people our community. Good on YOU, colleagues! Some of the best things in Newton don't make a lot of noise.

The Care Closet at Newton Public Library, in partnership with Health Ministries Clinic, Inc., is one of them. Tucked into the library's coffee area, it's a simple concept - essential hygiene items, available to anyone, no questions asked. Every donation that comes through the door is a neighbor saying "I've got you" to someone they may never meet. That's not charity. That's just how this community operates.

If you have new hygiene items to spare, drop them by the library's coffee area during regular library hours.

Take what you need. Donate if you're able. This is what Newton does.

Many staff from local organizations including ours were impacted by Conrad Thulani Moore through Damascus Road and Roots of Justice trainings. We continue to honor his memory and appreciate this article from Anabaptist World.

Thulani Conrad Lewis Moore, 71, a longtime antiracism educator and organizer who played key roles in the Damascus Road and Roots of Justice training programs, died Feb. 17. He lived in Tucker, Ga., with his wife and young daughter.

Sign up for United Way of Harvey and Marion Counties Serve Day!
Offer a few morning hours of hands-on community service. This year we're rolling up our sleeves for a wide variety of cleaning, tidying, and building projects, both indoor and outdoor.

Arrive at the United Way office (204 W. 6th in Newton) at 8:00 AM April 18 for a light breakfast, then get matched to a project group. We'll wrap up at noon with a complimentary lunch, which will be a great chance to connect with fellow volunteers and celebrate the morning's work!

Wear comfortable clothes you don't mind getting dirty, closed-toe shoes, and sun protection (just in case). We'll provide all tools and supplies.

In the spirit of Saint Valentine, join us Thursday evening at the Mennonite Central Committee - MCC workroom in North Newton to share love with inmates at Hutchinson Correctional Facility. Pack kits, design a note for each kit, enjoy snacks and hear stories from the impact of previous kits.

All ages are welcome to pack prisoner care kits. These kits contain a few basic hygiene products: socks, soap and toothpaste, which will show love to inmates on the indigent list at Hutchinson Correctional Facility.

MCC has purchased the materials in bulk to reduce costs, but monetary donations are welcome to help cover the cost (each kit ended up costing about $5).

We mailed Christmas cards to all of the inmates on our pen pal list (current matches and waitlist). If you ever wrote a card or note at one of our events, here's proof that it means something to the recipient. If you'd like to make an impact like this, stay tuned for an event coming up next month as we partner with Mennonite Central Committee - MCC Central States!
