No other Kodak 35 mm camera has been met with such admiration as the Kodak Retina. Nor has any other had such a profound influence on the advancement of the use of 35mm film by amateur photographers in both Europe and the USA. Use of 35mm film began in the mid-1930s due to the simultaneous appearance of the Kodak Daylight Loading Magazine (135 Film) in the USA and the Kodak Universal-Patrone that was introduced in Germany.

This is the Kodak Professional Digital Camera System, unveiled in 1991 and built for photojournalists and professionals. It is the first production digital SLR camera in history, priced from $20,000 to $25,000 USD (equivalent to $47,795 to $59,744 now) and 987 units were sold through 1994.

Based on an unmodified Nikon F3 HP, Kodak designed digital backs with their in-house 1.3 MP CCD sensors held at the film plane, and a base with a motor winder and digital converter.
The handheld portion had to be connected to a Digital Storage Unit, housing the electronics, battery, display, and a hard drive, and rode in a custom hip bag. Images can only be acquired from the DSU to a computer over SCSI.

Kodak also offered a slew of optional tools and functions, including a keyboard to add IPTC-ANPA captions directly on the unit, JPEG compression nearly quadrupling storage to 600 images, and a serial interface to transmit images around the world directly by modem, no computer required.

Kodak even provided a sturdy hard case to protect the kit during travel. Before adding a lens the camera itself weighs nearly 17 pounds, and the packed case clocks around 55 pounds. Fortunately it has wheels and a handle.

This un-restored example is one of several originally loaned by Kodak to the New England School of Photography. Some time after Kodak revealed the all-in-one DCS 200 in 1992 they told NESOP they could keep the cameras, and they did as historical displays until NESOP's closure. The cameras were sold in December 2022.

Check out our YouTube at the link in our bio for our latest monthly meetup "Beautiful Tools: A Photographer's Evolution with Charles Baldwin"

In this presentation, photographer and multimedia storyteller Charles Baldwin takes us on a journey through the cameras, techniques, and visual discoveries that have shaped his artistic evolution. Baldwin’s talk, Beautiful Tools: A Photographer’s Evolution, explores the idea that tools are more than equipment — they are catalysts for curiosity. From the early film cameras that first sparked his fascination with light, to the digital compacts and specialty gear that refined his voice, he traces how each tool opened a new doorway into the world of creative seeing.
