Sometimes, the hardest part of your job is simply getting there.

Here’s what an ordinary day at work looks like for Sohel Rana and dozens of other Helpster Charity volunteers. Every day, they spend long hours on the road just to reach a sick child.

They wade through mud and flooded rivers, hike on foot through jungle, cross by boat, and walk into slums most people would never dare to visit. All of it for one purpose: to make sure every single medical case we raise funds for is verified in person.

Why not just make a phone call or ask for a photo? Because we need to guarantee that every child in our patient database really needs life-saving treatment their family can’t afford. And for that, we need to see the child, the documents, and the living conditions with our own eyes.

That’s how we make sure every cent our donors give to Helpster Charity is actually saving a child’s life. And that’s how we’ve already saved more than 5,000 children’s lives.

A quarter of the world's population can't afford to get sick.

According to the most recent WHO/World Bank report, 2.1 billion people faced financial hardship trying to pay for healthcare in 2022. And a staggering 1.6 billion of them were pushed into poverty, or trapped deeper into it, by the cost of medical treatment.

This isn't just a personal tragedy. When a family loses its income to medical debt, the effects ripple outward: children drop out of school to work, communities lose those who kept local businesses running, and countries lose productivity for years afterward.

At Helpster Charity, we believe access to vital healthcare is a critical step in fighting global poverty. When a parent doesn't have to choose between treating their child and keeping a roof over their heads, the whole family gets a chance to build a better future.

Our mission is to fund life-saving medical treatment for children from the most vulnerable families, because we believe no one should lose their life over an unpaid $200 hospital bill.

20 children's lives saved a day. That's the current pace at which Helpster Charity funds life-saving medical treatment for children from the most underprivileged families.

Each case is verified in person and documented in our public patient database. Medical records, invoices, and receipts, are available for anyone to see, because we believe trust in a charity starts with its full transparency.

But back to those 20 lives a day. Is that a lot, or not enough?

Honest answer: we're proud of this number, but it's still far from covering all the children who need our help today. Kids whose lives depend on a $100–200 hospital bill their parents can't afford.

Today, we celebrate a big milestone: 5,000 children saved through Helpster Charity!

That's enough to fill 200 school classrooms, or one small town! And every single one of them is alive today because someone paid a hospital bill their family couldn't cover.

But for us, 5,000 isn't just a nice number on a cake. These are children we still picture, whose stories we remember in detail, and whose recovery we celebrated.

These are also stories of underprivileged families who had nearly lost hope of treating their child — before Helpster showed up.

And it's also you — the donors who helped us make this happen. So today, we're stepping away from the day-to-day to say a genuine thank you to everyone who supports our mission.

700,000 children's lives are lost to pneumonia every year. That's roughly one child under five, every minute. Yet pneumonia is easily and fully treatable with a basic course of antibiotics that can cost as little as $35.

But half of children with pneumonia symptoms never make it to a doctor, especially if they were born to low-income families in Asia and Africa. Why? Because their parents simply can't afford treatment. So the disease goes untreated, and the result is 700,000 children lost every year — a staggering number that's entirely preventable.

This number isn't a typo. It's the real cost of life-saving treatment for a child with malaria or pneumonia in countries like Kenya or Bangladesh. But for many families there, even $30 is an impossible sum. As a result, thousands of children lose their lives to fully treatable conditions simply because their parents can't afford treatment.
