As we still search for more dogs we no longer need to search for the owners!

Animal Cruelty Investigation Leads to Multiple Arrests in Sussex County

West Trenton, N.J. – The New Jersey State Police and the Sussex County Prosecutor's Office announce the arrest of three suspects—Joshua Ciemniecki, 19; Robert Ciemniecki, 74; and Kaila McNeill, 30, all of Phillipsburg, NJ—on animal cruelty charges following an investigation into abandoned dogs found across multiple townships in Sussex County.

On March 16, troopers from Troop "B" Sussex Station received multiple reports of abandoned dogs in Stillwater Township, Lafayette Township, and Wantage Township, Sussex County. Troopers found dozens of small dogs abandoned at each location in open crates without food or water.

Numerous animal control agencies, the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office, and members of the public assisted in rescuing 32 dogs. During the search, responders found two deceased dogs. Animal control agencies and local veterinary hospitals are caring for the remaining dogs until they are medically cleared for adoption.

On March 18, through various investigative means, three suspects were identified in connection with the abandonment of the animals. Joshua Ciemniecki and Kaila McNeill were arrested and charged with two counts of third-degree animal cruelty and three counts of fourth-degree animal cruelty. They were lodged in the Morris County Jail pending a detention hearing. Robert Ciemniecki was also arrested and charged with one count of animal cruelty and released pending a future court date.

Yesterday at 1600 hours a first alarm assignment was dispatched for a reported fully involved chicken coop fire approximately 20 feet from the residence in the Swartswood State Park area of Stillwater Township. Chief 42-2 arrived on scene and confirmed the working fire. Our four wheel drive engine 3 was first to arrive on scene and make entry up the icy driveway. One handline was stretched from Engine 3 and additional water was supplied from 42 Tanker 2. Chief 42-2 downgraded the first alarm assignment cancelling the RIT from Andover Twp FD and the air truck from Byram FD. Stillwater, Hampton, Fredon, and Branchville FDs operated on scene for approximately 1 hour to complete overhaul before clearing. As always we like to thank our mutual aid departments for assisting us.

This morning at approximately 1120 hours a resident was alerted by an audible fire alarm going off in their residence. The resident called 911 to report the alarm and Station 42 was dispatched. A short time later the resident reported a smoke condition in the home which further upgraded the alarm to a smoke inside bringing in additional units from Fredon, Hampton, and Branchville FDs. Units arrived on scene to find a small electrical fire in the basement with a smoke condition throughout all 3 stories. Power was isolated and ventilation was conducted to clear the smoke from the residence. Luckily this home was equipped with working fire alarms that alerted the occupants and they were able to call before the fire got bigger. Great job by all units on scene we thank our mutual aid companies for the assist.

Today at approximately 14:20 the Stillwater, Hampton, Fredon, Andover, Byram, and Newton Fire Departments were dispatched to a reported house fire in Stillwater Township. Chiefs 42-1 and 42-2 arrived to find a heavy smoke condition coming from the eaves in the attack space. 42 Engine 2 arrived and layed in a 5” supply line with siamese down the driveway and stretched 2 handlines into the Second floor of the structure. The fire was contained to the attic space and units were able to knock down the fire and complete overhaul in approximately two and a half hours. Approximately 1500 gallons of water was used on the fire. Luckily there were no injuries. We thank all the mutual aid fire and ems departments that responded to assist us along with the Sussex County Sheriff’s 911 dispatchers and the Sussex County Fire Marshal and Sussex County Fire Coordinator. We also thank Branchville Fire Department for setting up our draft site and Newton, Fredon and Hampton EMS for setting up rehab and standing by for us in case of any injuries. Please keep the family in your thoughts as they transition to recovering from the fire damage. We apologize to those participating at the YMCA polar plunge that we had to leave in a hurry and postpone the event to another date.

There’s a quiet kind of passion in the fire service that doesn’t ask for recognition. It shows up early, stays late, and does the work that needs to be done especially when no one is watching.

This photo captures that perfectly: members came down on a Sunday to wash the fleet in the cold. Not because it was their assignment. Not because anyone told them to. But because they saw it needed to be done, and that was reason enough.

That mindset is the foundation of this profession, both volunteer and career. Pride in the job and pure dedication. Respect for the equipment that serves our community. Ownership of the station, the rig, and the legacy handed down by those who came before us. It’s the understanding that the fire service isn’t about convenience it’s about commitment.

Do the right thing when it’s uncomfortable. Take initiative without being asked. Care deeply about the little things, because the little things define who we are when the big ones come.

That’s love for the job.
That’s passion for the fire service.
And that’s how the tradition continues in this thing of ours.
