Newton-Weston Bridge Replacement and Rehabilitation project from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation.

Construction Look-ahead: June 9 – June 20, 2025

This is a brief overview of construction operations and impacts for the Newton-Weston Bridge Replacement and Rehabilitation at I-90/I-95. MassDOT will provide additional notices as needed for high-impact work and changes to traffic configurations beyond those described below.

Current Construction Status:
The contractor continues installing excavation supports, relocating utilities, constructing roadways and continues with bridge construction.

Travel Impacts:
Over the next two weeks, drivers should expect lane closures on the highway, bridges, and on/ off ramps; rolling roadblocks; and road closures within the work zones listed below.

Additionally, I-90 Eastbound & Westbound will be reduced to one lane in each direction between Exits 123 and 125 in Newton and Weston, Friday, June 20 from 9:00 p.m. to Monday, June 23 at 5:00 a.m. More information is provided below.

Scheduled Work:
I-90 over I-95 and the Charles River-

Work within the project area around the bridge carrying I-90 over I-95 and the Charles River will entail:

*Installing permanent retaining walls
*Forming and pouring bridge barrier
*Installing Permanent Piles for Bridge Foundations (Pile Driving - Daytime)
*Installing drainage pipes
*Paving bridge approaches and ramps
*Installation of temporary lighting


I-90 Over the MBTA-

Work within the project area around the bridge carrying I-90 over the MBTA will entail:

*Preparing I-90 roadway traffic management plan deployment including temporary signs and temporary striping (Nighttime shifts)
*Preparation for track access including installation of track mats and access systems
*Temporary Barrier installation and resetting
*Superstructure Replacement Weekend #2: Friday, June 20 through Monday, June 23

Ramp A/B Over I-95 and the Charles River-
Work within the project area around the bridge carrying I-90 ramp traffic over I-95 and the Charles River will entail:'
*Substructure concrete repairs.

Ramp G Bridges-

Work within the project area around the ramp bridges carrying I-95 north and south to I-90 eastbound will entail:

*Installing excavation supports at the abutments (Pile Driving)
*Installation of permanent abutment piles (Pile Driving - Daytime and Nighttime shifts)
*Installing Drainage Structures
*Construction of widened ramp embankments
*Removing existing median barrier and excavating new pier locations

Work Hours:

Daytime Hours: Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Nighttime hours: Sunday through Friday from 8:30 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. as required

· Preparing I-90 roadway/slopes for traffic management plan deployment including installation of modified rock slope treatments (Daytime and Nighttime shifts).

· Preparation for track access including installation of track mats and access systems.

· Temporary Barrier installation and resetting.

· SUPERSTRUCTURE REPLACEMENT WEEKEND #1 Friday May 30th thru Monday June 2nd

· Preparations for 2nd MBTA weekend.

Work within the project area around the bridge carrying I-90 ramp traffic over I-95 and the Charles River will entail:

Substructure concrete repairs

Ramp G Bridges

Work within the project area around the ramp bridges carrying I-95 north and south to I-90 eastbound will entail:

Installing excavation supports at the abutments (Pile Driving)
Installation of permanent abutment piles (Pile Driving - Daytime and Nighttime shifts)
Installing Drainage Structures
Construction of widened ramp embankments.
Removing existing median barrier and excavating new pier locations.


Work Hours

Daytime Hours: Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Nighttime hours: Sunday through Friday from 8:30 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. as required

Travel tips

Drivers should pay attention to all signage and move carefully through the work zone. Police details, lane markings, temporary barriers, traffic cones, signage, and other tools will be used to control traffic and maintain safe work zones.

Plan ahead:

I-90 Eastbound & Westbound will be reduced to one lane in each direction between Exits 123 and 125 in Newton and Weston, Friday, May 30 from 9:00 p.m. to Monday, June 2 at 5:00 a.m.

· Plan ahead and avoid the area if possible.

· Lane reductions and reduced speeds; buses will replace trains on the Framingham/Worcester commuter rail line.

· While accelerated bridge construction methods will be used to replace the bridge, this project will significantly impact travelers during this weekend.
