Birth Haven

Birth Haven is an independent, non-sectarian, non-profit organization that provides shelter, support, and education for homeless, pregnant women and girls.

The agency provides a safe and nurturing environment in which to carry an unexpected pregnancy to term, while additionally helping the resident learn the tools necessary to achieve greater self-sufficiency. Individuals served by the organization include both those who intend to raise their child after delivery and those who opt for adoption placement. Most residents stay at Birth Haven throughout

their pregnancy and up until 6 weeks after the baby’s birth, exceptions are made when it is in the best interest of the mother and infant. Most of the residents who come to Birth Haven are in significant crisis. Many prospective participants are already homeless or are at risk of abuse in their current living situation. For some, reunification with family or partners is possible, after personal growth is attained through the individual therapy that Birth Haven provides. While others set out on their own after the baby is born with a new found independence and valuable life skills learned during their stay.

Birth Haven recently held our Annual Spring Tea Luncheon at Canoe Brook Country Club, and it was a wonderful day in support of the young mothers and infants we serve.

A special thank you to our inspiring guest speaker, Nicole Noonan, for generously donating her time and talent, our sponsors and attendees for their continued support, and for delighting our guests with a sweet treat from their candy truck!

St. Francis De Sales Church in Vernon held a beautiful Mother’s Day Tea this afternoon to benefit Birth Haven, and a wonderful time was had by all! Spring is a busy fundraising season for Birth Haven! 🌸We are now looking forward to our upcoming Spring Tea Luncheon, being held on Tuesday, May 19th at Canoe Brook Country Club! This year’s event features special guest speaker, Nicole Noonan, Esq., a nationally recognized leader in family law and a pioneer in the field of legal finance. Today we held our annual April Showers Luncheon, and we are so grateful to all of our attendees and sponsors for making it such a wonderful day.

The rainy weather couldn’t have been more fitting, as it reflected our April showers theme, while also reminding us of the real storms many of our residents face when they first come to our shelter. Because of your support, those storms can lead to brighter, more hopeful days ahead.

A wonderful day was had by all. A special thank you to our former resident, Kaitlyn, for sharing her courageous story with the crowd. Her words truly made an impact on everyone in the room.

It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of Birth Haven’s beloved founder, Elizabeth “Betsy” Sutherland.

Betsy’s compassion and courage built a legacy of hope. Through her life’s work, she created refuge, dignity, and love for homeless mothers and their babies—changing countless lives forever.

We promise, as the Board of Trustees and staff, to carry Betsy’s mission forward and to honor her life every day through continued service to the women and babies she so deeply loved.
