Friends of Webster Woods

Friends of Webster Woods Webster Woods is mostly owned by the City of
Newton and the state Department of Conservation
and Recreation, and therefore is permanently
protected.

FWW was created in 2015 to protect this last forest in Newton for generations to come and to support the city of Newton to re-acquire the woods (as donated by Mr Webster in 1915). However, in the middle of the publicly
owned woods is land owned by the Congregation Mishkan Tefila. A temple and parking lot is located at the front of the parcel off of Hammond Pond parkway, but the back portion is woo

ded land with hiking trails and wetlands that the public has used freely for many years, and is an inseparable part of the Webster Woods. On October 18, 2015, Congregation Mishkan Tefila voted to sell its property to Boston College. This means that the College, if it chose to, could develop the wooded portion and potentially destroy the value of this large contiguous forest. Fortunately, local residents are working with our elected leaders—to purchase the back land, permanently protect it, and preserve the value of the woods for us, our kids and grandkids. But we have a long way to go to complete the many steps needed to complete the process.
