The bill (to close 3 colleges by 2028) that State Senator Polk introduced, SB2726 died in committee. However, State Senator Nicole Boyd, introduced legislation in SB 2725 to create a University Efficiency Task Force. Its aim is also to address the ongoing enrollment cliff the state is facing..

A separate University System Efficiency Task Force could be created to examine the efficiency of the Mississippi public university system.

Sen. John Polk, R-Hattiesburg, told Mississippi Today that he just wanted to start a conversation when he filed Senate Bill 2726, which would require the governing board of Mississippi’s eight public universities to shutter three by 2028. When asked what would happen to the towns around these smaller colleges, like Itta Bena, Cleveland and Columbus? Polk said that’s not why the state universities exist. . .“Our universities have a mission,” Polk said. “We forget sometimes their mission is to educate in a higher form than K-12. It is not economic development.”

Donation Intake

Hope Missions Newton is happy to accept gently used donations that are clean, dry, and serviceable. (No evidence of rodents, insects etc.)

Pantry items (canned goods, pasta, milk, etc.) should not be expired.

Ensure your donations are received by Hope Missions Staff no later than 3 p.m. Please do not place items outside, after store hours. Items that are placed on the sidewalk may not get positioned to be used for Hope Missions Ministries or in the thrift store. Please take this into consideration before leaving items on the sidewalk. We have locations in Louisville, Meridian, Union and Newton with different hours in which to receive your donations. You may also call to schedule a drop off.

Due to limited staffing, please place all clothing in bags no larger than 33 gallon (without over stuffing) and bring all other items in boxes to avoid injury to staff in case of breakage.
