For 30 years, the Newsoms Ruritan Club has honored local students and educators who have shown exemplary academic achievements, demonstrated leadership in extra-curricular activities, and who have been active in their community. Since 1996, the Club has awarded dozens of scholarships to deserving students so that they may further their education.
We had our monthly club meeting on Tuesday night and awarded (3) $1,000 scholarships to deserving high school graduates. Each recipient received a plaque in addition to having their name permanently engraved on the plaques residing in the Ruritan clubhouse. We also honored The Educator of the Year from Meherrin Elementary School. A delicious dinner was served in honor of these scholastic superstars.
David Cuthbertson, Jr. is a graduate of Southampton Academy and received the Joe Everett Memorial Scholarship. He will be attending Virginia Tech in the fall to study Crop & Soil Sciences as well as participating in the ROTC program. His parents are Anthony and Jennifer Cuthbertson of Statesville.
George Lee Thorpe III received the E. Beale Carter Community Service Scholarship. He is a Southampton High School graduate and will be attending Liberty University to study Aviation. His parents are George Lee Thorpe, Jr. and Jill Thorpe.
Andrew Hinson received the Newsoms Ruritan Scholarship and will be attending New River Community College to study Electrical Engineering and Instrumentation. He is the son of Jonathan and Amy Hinson of Newsoms, and is a recent graduate of Southampton High School.
Congratulations to all of our scholarship recipients!
The Teacher of the Year for Meherrin Elementary School is Lisa Skeeters. Mrs. Skeeters is a Reading Specialist and has been teaching for over 39 years. The Club honored her achievements in the field of education with a framed certificate and a gift card.
In the business meeting, the club discussed the upcoming Summer Zone Meeting, planned the details of the upcoming Steak Feast on September 2nd at Draper’s Pond, and reviewed details of the recent renovations to our clubhouse.
The Newsoms Ruritan Club meets on the second Tuesday of every month. Ask a member or drop by to see about all our exciting and fun events as we serve the Newsoms community!
