We hate to report a major structural collapse, but Newport RI Police Department softball team crumbled into the infield at Cardines Field last night.

Heading into the final frame down 6–3, Newport Fire decided it was time to bring the heat. One offensive explosion later—featuring 7 unanswered runs and a few defensive throws that may or may not have ended up in traffic—the good guys walked away with a 10–6 victory.

To our brothers and sisters in blue: We know building construction isn’t taught in your academy, but next time you guys build a lead, make sure to inspect the foundation first.

Jokes aside, the real win belongs to our community. Together, we raised critical funds for the Baker Memorial Park First Responder Memorial to honor the heroes who came before us. Huge thank you to everyone who packed the stands, cheered loud, and bought 50/50 tickets.

It is with the heaviest of hearts that IAFF Local 1080 shares the sudden passing of our retired brother, Deputy Chief Dave Egan.

Dave dedicated his life to the fire service and our community, beginning his career on the Newport Fire Department as a callman on August 10, 1979, and being appointed full-time on August 17, 1986. Over an extraordinary career spanning more than 38 years, Dave rose through the ranks—earning promotion to Lieutenant on February 20, 1996, Captain on April 13, 2011, and finally Deputy Chief on April 27, 2014, before retiring on May 15, 2017.

Beyond his rank, Dave was the unofficial historian of the Newport Fire Department. His incredible recollection of events and dates pertaining to large incidents and department history was truly second to none, and he played an instrumental role in setting up the Newport Historical Society’s exhibit on the department.

Dave’s passion for the fire service was matched only by his passion for life. Whether he was spending time with his wife, Kathleen, out on his boat, at the beach, or catching up with friends around town, Dave was about as social as they come. He was loved by all who met him, and we will deeply miss seeing his smiling face around Newport.

Rest in Peace, Brother.

Local 1080 members don’t just wait around for calls—they spend their downtime practicing how to survive a shift straight out of a horror movie.

A massive shoutout to our Assistant Medical Director, Dr. Will Levesque, for stopping by today to run us through the gauntlet. He brought along some high-fidelity airway manikins, and let’s just say these aren’t the calm, quiet plastic dummies from CPR class.

Dr. Levesque’s high-tech creation comes fully equipped with:

-Adjustable neck stiffness (for when the mannequin decides it has serious neck pain)

-Jaw rigidity

-A bonus side of tongue swelling

-Vocal cord spasms just to keep things spicy

As if that wasn’t enough torture: the airway actively fills with blood while you’re working. Nothing tests your teamwork and blood pressure quite like wrestling a metallic, bleeding, metal-jawed puzzle in real time. 🩸😅

Jokes aside, trainings like this keep our crews sharp, focused, and ready to handle the absolute toughest airways when the stakes are highest. Huge thanks to Dr. Levesque for raising the bar and keeping our skills dialed in!

After a combined 58+ years of keeping our city safe, Captain Paul DelBonis and Captain Shane Vieira have officially hung up their gear.

Let’s be honest: the firehouse is about to get a whole lot quieter—and they are probably both drafting a strongly worded email right now explaining why we formatted this post incorrectly.

Paul was Newport Fire Department’s very first EMT-Cardiac paving the way for advanced life support delivered to critical patients in the prehospital setting. On the water Paul was heralded as a master boat operator.

A proud Newport native, Shane traded in serving his country for serving the citizens of the city he was raised in. Shane was a certified rescue swimmer and never hesitated to get his hands dirty. If it floated, burned, or needed fixing, Shane was always there to help.

Two incredible careers, countless lives saved, and zero hesitation when it comes to telling you exactly what’s on their minds.

Thank you, gentlemen, for your decades of grit, courage, and unmatched service to Newport. Enjoy retirement!

Just out here mapping the currents, checking the tides and placing bets on which slippery rock is going to cause the most trouble this summer. We preplan the dangerous spots so we are always ready - but do us a favor and stick to the safe zones like Secret Beach so we can keep our wetsuits dry. 🏊‍♂️

Our thoughts and prayers are with and the family of Robert Kilduff Jr. who bravely lost his life fighting a fire in a triple decker in Dorchester on Saturday night. Kilduff was a 24 year veteran of the fire service. Prior to joining BFD Kilduff served his country via the US Marines. He leaves behind a wife and 2 children.

This week members of the Newport Fire Department Local 1080 participated in their annual beginning of season rescue swimmer workout. All four shifts were given the opportunity to practice their skills on duty with the help of St George’s School who generously donated their time to help your firefighters sharpen their skills as the summer approaches.

The beauty of Newports varied coastline and waterways also presents a multitude of special threats including steep rocky cliffs, rugged coastlines that are often battered by waves, and thousands of vessels that transit the mouth of the Narragansett Bay.

The Newport Fire department’s special hazards division is comprised of rescue swimmers, jet ski operators, navigators and coxswains on Marine 6, and rope rescue technicians.

Congrats to Firefighters Lindsey Brady and Brendan Smith for passing their National Registry of EMTs paramedic exam!

In order to sit for the exam Lindsey and Brendan had to complete 700 hours of didactic work and 500 hours of clinical and ride time on a 911 ambulance. Additionally, both had to pass 2 exit tests and complete a capstone project to graduate from their program. It takes 1.5 to 2 years to complete a paramedic program and obtain licensure.

Newport is just 1 of 4 communities in RI that has a fire-based paramedic level service. There are currently 18 licensed paramedics within Local 1080 and more EMTs will be testing in the near future.
