Coral Bleaching Awareness Month is ending today. But coral bleaching continues.

It’s an issue that needs to stay in the news, even when it goes out of sight and out of mind.

That’s why we’ve been photographing bleached reefs for more than ten years, working with scientists and conservation organizations around the world to document what’s happening and making those images available through the Ocean Image Bank. It’s been great to see so many of our bleaching images used to communicate the reality of coral bleaching this month.

Wonderful to see the Polar Ocean Image Collection in Condé Nast Traveller!

Fewer than 0.01% of people will visit the poles, which is why powerful conservation imagery is so important for the polar regions.

We curated over 500 photos, from glaciers and icebergs to penguins and polar bears, to support the UN Ice Decade and Ocean Decade and give people a better sense of these incredible places.

The collection exists thanks to the support of PONANT EXPLORATIONS and Woods Hole Oceanographic Inst. who share our passion for protecting the polar regions that are so important to the health of the planet.

The new ​“Status of Coral Reefs of the World” report ​is a tough​ reality check on the state of coral reefs: ​ocean warming, ​coral bleaching​, ​and local pressures ​are all taking a serious toll.​

But the report also gives us something to be hopeful about: ​the science revealing coral reefs’ ability to recover quickly when given a ​​chance.​ A few regions have even defied the trend and seen an increase in coral cover.

The key is to target our actions where they can have the greatest impact.

That’s why we developed the 50 Reefs initiative: identifying the reefs with the greatest potential to survive climate change. Over 165 km2 of coral reefs have now been identified as sites for prioritized action. That’s a huge area to be hopeful about!

June was a big month for coral reefs. New research announced this month identified 165,922 km2 of coral reefs with the greatest potential to survive climate change.

It builds on our original 50 Reefs initiative, which became the global standard for targeting coral reef protection and restoration. It’s exciting to see it continue to guide these efforts and inspire further scientific studies to save coral reefs.

We’re proud to see 50 Reefs continue to play a key role in solving the coral reef crisis — helping inform decisions on where and how to protect the world’s most biodiverse and vulnerable ecosystem.

A​lmost 15 years ago, we ​t​ook Google Street View underwater for the first time to document coral reefs around the world. Along the way, we witnessed some of the most significant bleaching events ever recorded, ​a​nd share​d the story ​on Netflix through Chasing Coral​, then ​worked with partners to create , a global plan to protect the reefs most likely to survive climate change.

Reefs have always been central to what we do at The Ocean Agency, and today’s the day to celebrate them.
