Helping the ones who need us most
I have been a Veterinary Technician at the Virginia Tech Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Blacksburg for thirteen years. I am passionate about patient care and have made it a priority to treat every patient as if they were my own. Zane and I have been married for almost 10 years now. We both grew up in Blacksburg but have lived in Craig County, VA for the past 8 years. Zane has been a carpenter/ building contractor for 30 years. His clients remain loyal to him because of his quality of work, honesty, and integrity. Currently we have five dogs (all rescues), and 3 cats that adopted us.
Having spent many years in Craig County, it has become increasingly disturbing to us that this county does not have an animal shelter, a rescue organization, or a veterinary clinic. The animal control officer is overwhelmed and there are no resources available to provide consistent, adequate shelter to neglected dogs in crisis awaiting their “day in court”. I have witnessed, first hand, some very desperate and neglectful living conditions for animals in this area. This has inspired us to use the gifts and talents we were given to make a change.
We have organized a passionate group of pet lovers that will construct and make available emergency mobile dog houses to the Craig County Sheriff's department and Animal Control. We are assisted in this effort by Va. Tech Community Practice Veterinarians, 7 Veterinarian Technicians, 11 veterinary students, 4 building contractors and many other volunteers. The houses will be called HOMERS (Humane Outdoor Mobile Emergency Relief Shelters). These HOMERS will be built on May 10th , 2019.
