City of Newport Engineer
Mr. Gross,
I know you have written me that you and your staff drive NE 31st frequently and watch for problems all the time. I know you are most likely busy all around town with problems but, I want to make sure you are aware of the current situation. Please see pictures attached. The first two pictures show the curbing has been either been pushed or slipping away from the roadbed. Pictures 3 & 4 I am attempting to get pictures of the widening and deepening crevasse running along the north side of this road. This crevasse has been growing for some time with no efforts being made to shore it up or somehow stop the sliding. The water easily now flows into this trench and cannot help but widen and deepen the divide. The 5th picture is of the crease in the road running west to east in the westbound lane. I have written you of these creases before with no obvious corrective action by the street department. I am just a civilian and not a road engineer but it seems to me that cracks like this, where there are numerous ones on this street as you have acknowledged in the past, if they were to be at least sealed with tar as needed to prevent water from flowing into the seam from time to time, the roadway may stand a better chance to survive through winter. Anything being done is better than nothing which cannot help but hasten the eventual slide to the bottom of the hill, again. So, if the side crevasse could be somehow fixed and these cracks somehow kept from getting worse through neglect, then this road might stand a better chance of surviving another year. The side curbing needs to be reattached or rebuilt as the rain water is just flowing down the side of the roadway now, which of course hastens the inevitable slide to the bottom of the gully. I am just pointing this out to you in case you have not noticed the problem in your multiple trips on this road. I thank you in advance for any effort you might make to protect this roadway to serve another day. Thank you
Wayne
