Farm Day with the kids in Cocke County! 🌱🐄🚜

We had a great time today teaching the next generation a little more about agriculture, conservation, and taking care of the land. It’s always fun getting the kids involved, answering their questions, and watching them learn where their food comes from and why healthy soil is so important.

Thankful for everyone who helped make Farm Day possible and for the opportunity to spend the day with our Cocke County kids! 💚🌱

Cocke County Soil Conservation District has conservation options available that may be able to help with livestock watering systems, pipelines, watering facilities, and rotational grazing.

Does anyone around here still raise to***co — or did your family used to? 🌱

If you know Ashlan with USDA NRCS, you may have met her on a farm visit or at one of our local field days. Her husband and his family still raise to***co, and this is a look at their crop this year. 🩷

It’s amazing to think about how much to***co once shaped agriculture in Greene, Cocke, and the surrounding East Tennessee counties. Greene County was once one of the major burley to***co-producing areas, and generations of farm families depended on it as a cash crop.

There may not be nearly as many to***co patches as there used to be, but it’s still a piece of our farming heritage that some families continue today.

Who remembers setting, topping, cutting, hanging, stripping, grading, or baling to***co? And does anyone still raise it today? We’d love to hear your to***co memories! 🌱🚜

Field Day Event - Last Thursday

What a great evening in the field last Thursday! 🌱🐄

Cocke County Soil Conservation District, Greene County Soil and Water Conservation District, USDA NRCS, and Cocke County UT Extension came together for a great field day focused on agriculture, conservation, and learning from one another.

A special thank you to our Cocke County SWCD board members, Holly Leatherwood and Jill Childress, for coming early and helping get everything ready for the evening. We appreciate you both pitching in and helping out! We also want to thank Greene County SWCD board member Johnny Ottinger for helping with the event and bringing his equipment. We appreciate your support and willingness to help make the evening a success!

A special thank you to Gary Smelcer for generously allowing us to host the field day at his operation and for all the work and support he put into making the event possible. We truly appreciate his hospitality.

We also want to thank Evan Nease for leading an excellent demonstration on sprayer calibration—his knowledge and instruction were a big help to everyone in attendance.

Appreciation as well to Gary Smelcer and Corbin Neas for bringing out their tractors and sprayers to support the demonstrations and give producers a hands-on look at equipment in action.

We were also glad to have a special guest, Maddie with Corteva Agriscience, who generously donated pasture w**d identification booklets for attendees.

🌾 Calling all farmers and landowners! Join us for the Twilight Pasture Walk on Thursday, August 13th at 6:30 PM at Smelcer Farm in Parrottsville.

Topics include:
🌱 Live herbicide demonstration for Johnson grass control in a hayfield
🌾 NRCS conservation practices and opportunities
🌿 Pasture improvement strategies
🌱 W**d management
🌾 Seeding guidelines
🐄 Grazing management

Hosted by UT Extension, USDA NRCS, and the Cocke & Greene County Soil & Water Conservation District.

🍽 Dinner will be provided.
✅ Free to attend.
📝 Pre-registration is required by August 7th.
📍 The event address will be provided to registered participants closer to the event (likely by email).

💲 A $25 fee is required only if you wish to receive pesticide credits for private or commercial applicator certification. Otherwise, the event is free to attend.

The Ag Tag specialty license plate is turning 30, and the Tennessee Department of Agriculture needs your help choosing its next design.

For three decades, the Ag Tag has celebrated Tennessee agriculture and forestry while supporting agricultural education, youth leadership, market development, forestry awareness and programs that strengthen rural communities across the state.

As we look toward the next 30 years, this milestone is an opportunity to celebrate the Ag Tag’s impact, bring renewed attention to its purpose and invite the public to help choose its next design.

From June 9 through June 23 at 4 p.m. CT, vote for your favorite design: the original Ag Tag, a modernized version of the current Ag Tag or a new design. The two new options feature the Pick Tennessee Products logo, which is celebrating 40 years of connecting consumers with Tennessee farms and food businesses, as well as the 4-H and FFA emblems, recognizing the Ag Tag’s longstanding support of agricultural education and youth leadership.

FSA is strengthening the farm safety net thanks to the Working Families Tax Cuts Act that adds up to 30 million new base acres nationwide. Landowners have the opportunity to review and consider base acre increases in preparation for enrollment in the Agriculture Risk Coverage (ARC) and Price Loss Coverage (PLC) programs beginning with the 2026 and future crop years.
