Some of the best things about Caspian Lake can't be measured.

Family traditions... morning paddles... conversations on docks and porches. Not to mention the shared commitment to keeping this special place healthy for future generations.

For the past 10 years, Lake Wise has helped lakeshore landowners turn that commitment into action.

Join us as we celebrate a decade of Lake Wise on Caspian Lake with an evening of stories, practical shoreline stewardship insights, locally sourced refreshments, and conversation with neighbors who care deeply about the future of the lake.

You'll hear from Lake Wise Program Specialist, Will Marlier, and longtime Caspian environmental advocate, Stew Arnold, about the program's impact, how it works, and the progress that's been made around the lake over the past decade.

Afterward, stay to enjoy refreshments, connect with fellow community members, and explore the Highland Center's "Call of the Loon" exhibit featuring work from local artists focused on loon conservation.

📅 Thursday, June 18
🕟 4:30–6:00 PM

Whether you're a longtime Lake Wise participant, a lakeshore landowner, or simply someone who loves Caspian Lake, we hope you'll join us in celebrating what we've accomplished together and looking ahead to what's next.

Free and open to the public.

The best part about local conservation work? You can actually see the difference you're making.

This June, volunteers will join OCNRCD staff along Brighton Brook and the Black River to help maintain newly planted riparian buffers that protect water quality, reduce erosion, and improve habitat. It's hands-on, outdoorsy, and deeply worthwhile. Plus: lunch provided. Bring your sunscreen, bug spray, and a friend who likes getting their boots muddy.

Starting a shoreline project before checking permit requirements is the most common mistake we see.

And it's the one that causes the biggest delays.

Fixing it after the fact can mean compromised water quality and habitat, extra time, added steps, fines, and rework.

A quick check now saves a lot later.

A lot of restoration projects get planted. Our goal is to keep them maintained.

That follow-up work is what gives these young trees their best chance to survive, and what helps protect our rivers long-term.

This June, OCNRCD is hosting volunteer monitoring and maintenance days in Irasburg and Craftsbury, and we'd love extra hands in the field.

Expect fresh air, satisfying work, muddy boots, and a direct connection to local conservation efforts.

RSVP today.

Not all culverts are created equal... and this one? It's getting a serious upgrade. 👀

Jason spent a day out in the field this April with farmers, engineers, contractors, and partners walking through plans for a project that's equal parts practical and impactful:

🐄 A new cattle ford crossing
💧 Swapping a 2-foot culvert for an 8-foot structure that can actually handle the flow and allow for aquatic passage

This culvert replacement is one piece of a larger project that also includes livestock exclusion fencing and tree planting to help protect water quality and strengthen stream health long-term.

This is the kind of behind-the-scenes work that makes a big difference later on. Better water flow, less erosion, healthier streams, and a setup that holds up when the next big storm rolls through.

Also worth saying: this is what it looks like when everyone's at the table figuring it out together. Farmers, agencies, contractors... real collaboration right in the field.

Cleaner water starts upstream. By volunteering at our Trees for Streams Monitoring & Maintenance Days, you'll help young streamside plantings survive long enough to stabilize banks, reduce runoff, and strengthen local ecosystems for years to come.

Join OCNRCD staff in the field this June for a rewarding day of hands-on conservation work along Brighton Brook and the Black River.

Lunch and tools provided. Grab a friend and sign up!

42 years in, and this community still shows up.

On May 2nd, our 42nd Annual Plant Sale & Conservation Fair brought together farmers, families, and neighbors from across Orleans, Caledonia, and Essex Counties for a morning of hands-on learning, great company, and over 2,900 plants (55 species!) sold.

From the Shiitake Mushroom Workshop (yes, power tools were involved) to the NRCS Rainfall Simulator, Stream Table, and Willow Staking Demo... conservation was on full display, and it was anything but boring.

As volunteer Walter Medwid said it best: "The spirit of community rang high today... something we badly need."

Thank you to everyone who came out, picked up their orders, and made year 42 one to remember. We'll see you for 43.
