With deep sadness, we share that Edelmira Bejarano went home to be with the Lord yesterday afternoon. Her sudden passing leaves us with a profound sense of loss.
Edelmira was a valued member of our team for more than 22 years. She began serving faithfully as a volunteer with Orphan Helpers in June 2001 at the Rosa Virginia Pelletier center that housed more than 400 girls from very tough backgrounds and situations. Edelmira even took her nine-year-old son with her when she visited the girls.
“I ran a little candy shop business during the day. When my son came home from school, we would eat and then go to Rosa Virginia in the evenings around 5:00pm and stay until 7:00pm,” Edelmira recalled in 2021. “When we could afford it, we would ride the bus four miles to get to the center. Buses weren’t running later at night, though, so we would walk home, even in the storms. We would be scared walking at night, but we would sing praise songs to God and to ask for his protection along the way.”
In July 2003, Edelmira began full-time employment with Orphan Helpers, impacting many young lives over the next two decades. At the time of her passing, she continued to serve at the CISNA center where boys are placed for their own safety.
“This journey has had its ups and downs, but God has not abandoned me. He has trained and prepared me in many ways I never thought possible,” Edelmira reflected a few years ago. “Now, here I am 20 years later. I will be here, always striving for the best ways to teach and lead, until God tells me ‘enough’ because serving my Lord and God is my privilege.”
While we take comfort in knowing that she is now in the arms of God, we will miss her more than words can express. Please keep her children and grandchildren in your thoughts as they go through this difficult time.
