The Hampton Roads Oral History Project (HROHP) aims to document the impact of the civil rights movement on area residents. This community-engaged learning project was established in the fall of 2012 by CNU history professor Dr. Laura Puaca, in conjunction with two community organizations, the Newsome House Museum and Cultural Center and the Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center. Attached is the interview conducted and transcribed with Linwood DeBrew in 2014.

Linwood DeBrew was born in Scotland Neck, North Carolina on February 3, 1943. As a young child, he moved to Newport News, where he lived in Newsome Park with his family. Born on April 22, 1916, Dr. Charles Waldo Scott was a renowned surgeon & community leader. He began practicing medicine in Newport News in 1948 and would go on to become the Medical Director & Chief Surgeon of Whittaker Memorial Hospital. He was appointed to the Newport News School Board in 1952. One of the many organizations that honored his community service was the Virginia General Assembly, which presented him with a special commendation in 1988. Dr. Scott died January 9, 1993. The C. Waldo Scott Center for H.O.P.E (Helping Our People Emerge) is named for him and continues his legacy of community involvement.

Step back in time to see the homes that once lined Pinkett’s Beach — Newport News’ first African American waterfront resort, founded by William Ward Pinkett Sr. during segregation.

More than just a shoreline, it was a place of faith, family, and fellowship — a cherished gathering spot that eventually became King-Lincoln Park, honoring Martin Luther King Jr.

The photo shown is the Pinkett family home, located on the waterfront at 1 Nelms Avenue where King-Lincoln Park sits today.
