Our Deputy CEO, Kaaleah Jones, brought her lived experience and the perspectives of young people in Newport News to the national conversation on “Understanding Teen Takeovers: A Multifactorial Approach” at CBCF’s 55th Annual Legislative Conference! 💜

Thank you, Congresswoman Robin Kelly, for inviting Kaaleah to lend her perspective and for bringing together dynamic leaders from across the country with different backgrounds and lived experiences. These conversations matter when we take the time to understand why young people are gathering, what they’re asking for, and how we can support them.

Alongside Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott and fellow panelists, Kaaleah highlighted how online culture influences youth gatherings and the need for adults to understand this generation and receive the training to support them. Young people deserve safe places to connect, have fun, and help plan the activities intended for them.

Today, our Deputy CEO, Kaaleah Jones, is representing Abu Unity Incorporated in Washington, D.C., as a panelist for “Understanding Teen Takeovers: A Multifactorial Approach”! ✊🏽

The panel is Hosted by Congresswoman Robin Kelly (IL-02) and moderated by Dr. Almethia Franklin and includes Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott, Reece Johnson of Good Kids Mad City, Village of Matteson Director of Community Engagement Mia Carter, and Sergeant Jay Black.

Kaaleah will draw on her lived experience to challenge misconceptions about why teens organize and participate in takeovers. She’ll also lift up the need to restore and expand places beyond home and school where young people can safely gather, build friendships, and have fun (aka “third spaces”), especially as those opportunities have become more limited since the pandemic.

Abu Unity wants the broader community to know that Young people need opportunities to enjoy themselves without having to sit through a lecture or workshop every time they come together. There is time and value in those learning opportunities, and there also needs to be room for them to simply be young.

Kaaleah has been advocating for her peers since she was 10. Now 24, she continues that work while listening to the generations coming behind her. Her perspective is shaped by conversations with her 17-year-old sister and her friends, her leadership with Abu Unity’s Youth Public Safety Council, her experience as a former ninth-grade teacher, and her own daily life in a neighborhood impacted by gun and community violence.

This discussion is part of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s 55th Annual Legislative Conference (ALC55)⁠, as the foundation commemorates its 50th anniversary: “Rooted, Ready & Rising.”

It is always meaningful to return to the places that helped shape us and encourage the next generation. Wishing Crittenden’s students, families, teachers, and staff a safe, successful, and amazing school year! Go Cougars! 🐾

We were up and at em early this morning with Assistant Principal Fenner, NN Office of Community Safety, and our Partner in Community & HHS alum, Erica Callicutt at Heritage High School, welcoming the students back with smiles and Positive Vibes ..
