Today's Chi Gamma Xi Fraternal Order, Inc. Black History Feature:

Tony Hansberry Jr. was a child prodigy of the medical field. At 14 years old, Hansberry developed a new suture method for hysterectomy patients. Because of Hansberry, patients now have decreased hospital stays and more efficient surgeries. His breakthrough was fueled by his loss at his eighth grade science fair at Darnell Cookman School of Medical Arts. The school has been described as the first medical magnet school in the country. Hansberry’s research began one summer during his internship at the University of Florida ‘s Center for Simulation Education and Safety Research in Jacksonville, Florida.

Now at age 18, Hansberry, a.k.a. “The next Charles Drew” is a freshman bio-medical engineering student at Florida A&M University. The Tallahassee native serves as senator of his freshman class and is a chemistry major. He’s followed his father’s footsteps by enrolling at FAMU and his mother’s – who is a registered nurse. We expect nothing but bigger and better thing for this future neurosurgeon.

Today's Chi Gamma Xi Fraternal Order, Inc. Black History Feature:

It has been said that "Necessity is the mother of invention." And in the case of Kelvin Doe, nothing could be truer!! The Sierra Lione native's main reason for becoming an engineer was simple: he needed the innovations for life. When Kelvin was 13, he realized that store-bought batteries were out of his price range for his inventions so he created his very own battery using soda, acid, and metal. After some trial and error, he wrapped tape around the dried mixture in a cup and never went to the store to purchase another battery again.

Now at the age of 17, Kelvin runs his own radio station, that is powered by a generator that he made from a worn voltage stabilizer that he found in the trash, out of his Sierra Leone home where he is known as DJ Focus.

Most musical artists and producers alike would place working with Jay-Z on their top 10 list of people to work with. But for 16 yr. old Ebony Oshunrinde aka "WondaGurl", not only did she get to work with the Grammy Award winning artist, she had her first major released production piece "Crown" be used on his Grammy nominated Magna Carta Holy Grail album. Ebony became inspired to make beats at the ripe age of 9 after watching a video of Jay-Z & Timberland working in the studio together, and decided that she wanted to be just like the mega-producer. When she was 14, the young producer entered Toronto’s Battle of The Beatmeakers competition and performed well, but was eliminated during the quarterfinals. The following year Ebony entered the competition again and won and was signed to the Black Box. Through Black Box is where she was able to meet musical artist Travis Scott, who upon hearing her work passed it on to Jay-Z. Now that Ebony has working with a legendary artist under her belt, she’d like to continue producing tracks and possibly win a Grammy. She wants to spread the word to girls and young women that the sky’s the limit.

Did you know that a young African American female has a planet named after her?! Meet Andrea Pugh!! At the age of 16, Pugh already had a minor planet named after her. It was the second-place prize she earned at the 2010 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in San Jose, Calif.

“That’s a highlight for me,” says Pugh. Her project for the fair looked at ways to infuse nutrients into soil as a better method of preparing it for growing crops. She’s not all about science, though. The Saginaw Arts & Sciences Academy high school junior has a concentration in dance at the academy, is vice president of the Saginaw NAACP Youth Council and was tapped as Miss Saginaw County Outstanding Teen for 2010-2011. She hopes to attend Florida A&M, where she will pursue environmental sciences or study to become an investment banker. Andrea is also one of The Roots Top 25 Young Futurists to look out for.

Today's Chi Gamma Xi Fraternal Order, Inc. Black History Feature:

A lot of people say that many African American children are not "socially conscious" or aware of the travesties going on in the world around them. Not so the case with Joshua Hall. In 2009, Hall discovered the widespread horror of human trafficking and child slavery in Ghana through the service-based program, Journey for Change.

Since returning from the West African country, the Frederick Douglass Academy IV Secondary School student has spoken about modern-day slavery at high schools, universities and the United Nations. He is one of four recipients of a Teen Nick 2010 Halo Award.

Nick Cannon will soon be a father, something he says will only help in his job as chairman of TeenNick, Nickelodeon's network aimed for youths. "It allows me to dive even deeper into this," says Cannon about what impending fatherhood means for his day job. "That was the one missing element."

Some would say that children in our country are selfish, over-privileged and could care less about the community or existence of others. But that's not the case with Stephanie Asante and Nshira Turkson. In their last year of high school, these two young ladies collaborated on a project for school called "Goo Goo For Ghana", in April 2010, collecting toys and clothing. After shipping more than 250 items to a Ghanaian orphanage, they used the same business plan for their new nonprofit, "Born From Love."
