IEPs Must Be Reevaluated Every 3 Years

Every 3 years, schools are legally required to reevaluate students with IEPs — and it’s not just a formality.
⠀⠀
This triennial review is a chance to:
✅ Reassess your child’s strengths & needs
✅ Determine if they still qualify for services
✅ Adjust goals, supports, or placement
⠀⠀
Think of it like a wellness check for your child’s learning plan — are the supports still working? Are we aiming high enough? Are new challenges showing up?
⠀⠀
And yes — parents can request an earlier reevaluation if things aren’t working (you don’t have to wait the full 3 years!).
⠀⠀
Education isn’t “set it and forget it.” Growth happens, and the IEP should grow right along with your child. 🌱

504s Require Notification, Not Consent

⚠️ Here's a key difference between 504s and IEPs:
Schools are required to notify you about a 504 Plan… but they don’t need your written consent to implement it.
⠀⠀
That means your child’s 504 Plan can be created, updated, and even put into action without your signature — as long as you’ve been informed.
⠀⠀
Sounds wild? It’s because 504 Plans fall under civil rights law, not special education law. The process is generally less formal than an IEP.
⠀⠀
But don’t worry — you still have rights!
✅ You can request a meeting
✅ You can ask for changes
✅ You can file a grievance if needed
⠀⠀
Pro tip: Just because consent isn’t required doesn’t mean your input isn’t valuable. Speak up, ask questions, and stay involved!

IEPs Require Parent Consent

Parents, did you know?
Before an IEP can be put into place, your written consent is required — and that’s your legal right.
⠀⠀
Whether it’s the initial evaluation or the start of services, the school must ask for and receive your approval before moving forward.
⠀⠀
You have the right to:
🔹 Review the plan
🔹 Ask questions
🔹 Request changes
🔹 Say “yes” — or “not yet”
⠀⠀
This ensures YOU stay in the driver’s seat when it comes to your child’s education. You’re not just a guest at the table — you’re a decision-maker.
⠀⠀
Because collaboration isn’t a courtesy in the IEP process — it’s required by law.
⠀⠀

504 Plans Don’t Require Goals

Unlike IEPs, 504 Plans do not include academic or developmental goals — and that’s by design.
⠀⠀
A 504 Plan is about equal access, not individualized instruction. It outlines accommodations and supports, like:
▪️ Extra time on tests
▪️ Permission to leave class for medical reasons
▪️ Use of assistive technology
⠀⠀
But you won’t find formal, measurable goals like “increase reading fluency by 20 words per minute” — that’s an IEP thing.
⠀⠀
This doesn’t mean 504s aren’t powerful — they just serve a different purpose: breaking down barriers so students can learn within the general education environment.
⠀⠀
So if your child needs targeted instruction to build skills — it may be time to consider an IEP.
⠀⠀

IEPs Must Include Goals

An IEP isn’t just a list of services — it’s a roadmap for your child’s growth.
⠀⠀
By law, every IEP must include measurable annual goals that address the student’s unique academic, behavioral, or functional needs.
⠀⠀
These goals are:
🔹 Specific
🔹 Measurable
🔹 Achievable
🔹 Relevant
🔹 Time-bound (yep, like SMART goals!)
⠀⠀
Whether it’s improving reading fluency, mastering multiplication, or building social skills, these goals help track real progress — not just check boxes.
⠀⠀
💡 Pro Tip: You have the right to participate in creating these goals. Ask questions, get clarity, and make sure they’re meaningful!
⠀⠀
Because a child with a plan and a goal? That’s a student on the move. 🚀

IEP = Academic/Developmental Needs

IEPs are designed for students whose disabilities impact their ability to learn, grow, or develop within the general education setting.
⠀⠀
This can include:
Learning disabilities (like dyslexia)
Speech/language impairments
Autism
Emotional or behavioral disorders
Developmental delays
⠀⠀
To qualify for an IEP, a student must meet criteria under one of 13 IDEA disability categories and need specialized instruction to succeed.
⠀⠀
It’s more than needing extra time or a quiet space — it’s about needing an individualized learning plan tailored to how a student learns best.
⠀⠀
If a child’s academic or developmental challenges are holding them back, an IEP may be the support they need to move forward with confidence.

504 = Physical or Medical Conditions

504 Plans are often written for students with physical or medical conditions — even if they don’t need special education services.
⠀⠀
Think:
Diabetes
Asthma
ADHD
Anxiety
A temporary injury
⠀⠀
These conditions may not affect a student’s ability to learn academically — but they can impact their daily functioning, attendance, focus, or stamina in school.
⠀⠀
That’s where a 504 Plan comes in. It ensures students get accommodations that support their health and learning access — like snack breaks for blood sugar, a quiet testing room, or permission to carry an inhaler.
⠀⠀
Bottom line: You don’t have to struggle to qualify. If a condition affects your child’s school life, they may be eligible.
⠀⠀

IEP = Access + Progress

While a 504 Plan gives students access to learning, an IEP goes further — it ensures they’re not just in the room, but making meaningful progress.
⠀⠀
An IEP provides:
✅ Specialized instruction
✅ Measurable goals
✅ Support services
✅ Progress tracking
⠀⠀
The goal? Help students not only participate in the general curriculum — but actually grow, improve, and meet personal learning milestones.
⠀⠀
Because every child deserves more than just a seat at the table — they deserve the tools to thrive at it.
