Join us on March 4th for the opening reception of the ‘CANTemporaries Auction and Programming Series’ . While with us be sure to view and bid on CANtemporary Artist in Residence, Heather Beardsley’s, embroidered photographs. Read on to learn about her ‘Strange Plants’ series & RSVP at our website. Link in bio.

Strange Plants (embroidered photographs):

In December 2017, I visited Pripyat, the ghost town closest to the site of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, where over the past thirty years nature that was destroyed by human hubris and incompetence has grown up to dominate the abandoned man-made structures. These pieces use this powerful juxtaposition as a lens to look examine the current relationship between mankind and the natural world. Over the past couple of years I have continuously added images from cities around the world my art is taking me too, with the various architectural styles giving a global scale to this plant "invasion". These cities include Budapest, Vienna, Beijing, Chicago, Kiev, Las Vegas, and Cobh, and more will be added to the list as my travels continue. In a time when cities are growing at an unprecedented rate, nuclear tensions are at a post-Cold War high and we are feeling the effects of climate change more every year, these pieces pose questions about what the future holds.

Although created in an intimate scale and presented in a whimsical fashion, using embroidered floral and plant motifs usually pejoratively ascribed to the realms of “decorative art” or “craft”, on closer examination the implications become more sinister. As plants seemingly grow uncontrollably through the buildings and streets, people are either absent from or oblivious to the situation. Viewers are left to wonder about this change in dynamic, what preceded it, and what can prevent it. The resulting works exist in an ambiguous space: a drastic shift has clearly occurred, but nature has fought back and perhaps a new balance has been reached.

The CAN Foundation is proud to present The Second Installment of 'Conversations in Art', a Climate Symposium in partnership with ODU's Institute for Coastal Adaptation and Resilience and Artist Nico Cathcart
Art is revolutionary, it changes perspectives, and challenges our humanity.
In the spirit of positive change, The CAN Foundation has partnered with ODU's Institute for Coastal Adaptation and Resilience and artist Nico Cathcart for a climate symposium taking place February 4th, at Assembly, in conjunction with the art exhibition 'Asymmetry'. The symposium will feature a unique blend of artists, leading Virginia climate scientists, and environmental resilience officers. Attendees will learn and engage in conversation about the effects and causes of local climate change, and what the Norfolk/Portsmouth areas are doing to change the future. The event will culminate in a round table discussion featuring artists, scientists, and resilience experts, moderated by CAN Foundation Director Asa Jackson, in a meeting of the minds surrounding the topics of the environment, and climate change.
Expert Panelists:
Science of Climate Change: Dr. Jessica Whitehead, Executive Director, ODU ICAR & Dr. Jeremy Hoffman, Chief Scientist, Science Museum of Virginia
Practice of Resilience: Gina Harris, Chief Resilience Officer, City of Portsmouth & Kyle Spencer, Chief Resilience Officer, City of Norfolk
Artists: Nico Cathcart, painter, muralist, activist & Asa Jackson, CAN Executive Director, and others

RSVP at our website. Link in bio. We are still accepting submissions for the open call to be included in this event and discussion.
