Writing Tip Wednesday! ✍️

Setting writing goals is a useful tool to motivate yourself to learn a new technique, refine a skill, or to explore different aspects of writing. Writing goals can focus on a variety of topics such as improving grammar, learning a new genre, or completing a project.

There are many ways to evaluate your progress in achieving your writing goals. Asking for feedback from peers, visiting a writing center, or using an online writing resource are all ways to help track progress, identify areas for growth, and highlight strengths in your writing journey!

There is no WRITE way to set your goals, so make sure to craft them in a way that feels authentic and productive to you!

Throwback Thursday!⏪

In October of 2021, the Tidewater Community Writing Center presented to the Peninsula Chapter of the Rotary Club. The presentation introduced TCWC and all of the work we do in the community, but also highlighted some other incredible organizations at Christopher Newport University such as the Center for Community Engagement and the CNU Writing Center.

The Peninsula Chapter of the Rotary Club is Newport News' local organization, which is one of many Rotary Clubs across the nation, and world! The Rotary Club is the largest international service organization and aim to provide acts of humanitarian service in local communities across the globe.

Writing tip Wednesday! ✏️

Today's writing tip is all about receiving feedback on your work. Feedback is a powerful tool that you can use to ensure your writing is sending the right message, easily comprehendible, is engaging, and is free of grammatical mistakes. Feedback gives your writing extra pairs of “eyes” that can catch any mistakes that you did not notice in the editing process.

Receiving feedback can be challenging, because it is hard to notice small details and errors in your own work, but it can greatly improve the quality by...
- Finding discrepancies in your story
- Matching the tone to your audience
- Spotting grammatical changes
- Affirming engaging content and style

Try to practice giving and receiving feedback with your peers on your next writing piece and see what you can learn from one another. There is no WRITE way to do feedback, so explore different ways that work best for you!

Throwback Thursday! ⏪

In honor of our incredible representatives from Christopher Newport University (CNU) and the Tidewater Community Writing Center (TCWC), Dr. Brooke Covington and Brooke Coleman (‘25) presenting on burnout and compassion fatigue in Community Writing Centers, we wanted to highlight TCWC’s immense growth over the past two years.

In October of 2021, TCWC attended the 2021 International Writing Centers Association (IWCA) Fall conference. Just this past month, two years later, TCWC was represented among the list of influential presenters at the IWCA Fall Conference in Baltimore, Maryland.

Thank you to Dr. Brooke Covington and Brooke Coleman (‘25) for admirably representing TCWC and CNU!
