Meet Literacy for Life
Literacy for Life is an independent 501(c)3 organization that has been working since 1975 to provide literacy services to adults for success in life and work.We provide individualized, one-to-one and small group tutoring for adults in reading, writing and math skills as well as instruction in English for speakers of other languages. We also support learners pursuing high school completion through the General Educational Development (GED) Test. Literacy for Life has helped people with numerous individual goals, including studying for and passing the U.S. citizenship exam, obtaining a better job, learning to manage family finances, passing a driver’s license test, effectively communicating with medical professionals, and helping a child with homework.

We are always looking for volunteer tutors to help us further our mission!

🇺🇸 Co-Host Spotlight: Veterans Care Project 🇺🇸

As a proud co-host of Hands Across Hampton Roads, we're honored to recognize the incredible work of Veterans Care Project.

Veterans Care Project is dedicated to supporting veterans receiving care in our local VA hospitals, especially during the holidays when being away from family can be especially difficult. Through partnerships with local restaurants and generous community supporters, they provide donated meals to hospitalized veterans, ensuring no one feels forgotten during life's most meaningful moments.

In addition to holiday meals, Veterans Care Project distributes gift bags filled with comfort items to veterans in the hospital—small gestures that serve as powerful reminders that their service is appreciated and their sacrifices have not been forgotten.

This mission is made possible largely through food donations from local businesses and the sale of Veterans Care Project merchandise, with every contribution helping bring comfort, dignity, and compassion to veterans throughout Hampton Roads.

When you join us at Hands Across Hampton Roads on July 11th, be sure to stop by and meet the man behind this inspiring organization. Learn more about their mission, discover ways to get involved, and help us celebrate those who continue serving long after the uniform comes off.

Together, Claus Cares and Veterans Care Project are working to strengthen our community and ensure that no veteran stands alone.

❤️🤍💙 Still Serving.

We will be highlighting all of our participants leading up to our big event starting today with on of our hosts. At Claus Cares, we believe that compassion shouldn't be limited to a season. As a Hampton Roads-based nonprofit, we work year-round to support individuals, families, veterans, and ALICE households facing hardship with dignity, kindness, and practical assistance. Through our Love Your Neighbor Boutique, we provide free clothing, household essentials, hygiene products, pet supplies, and other basic needs to those we serve. We help connect children and adults in need with bicycles generously donated through our community partnerships, ensuring access to transportation and opportunities for recreation. Our programs also include Operation Spread the Joy, our holiday assistance initiative that provides gifts and meals to families during the Christmas season, Tis the Seasoning, a food drive focused on collecting the often-overlooked items that complete a meal, and Operation Buddy Check, our veteran outreach program dedicated to fostering connection, support, and the reminder that no one stands alone. Whether through volunteering, donating, partnering with us, or simply sharing our mission, every act of kindness helps us build a stronger, more caring community. We invite you to stop by our booth at Hands Across Hampton Roads to learn more about the work we're doing and discover how you can help us continue spreading joy all year long.

With our big event coming up to benefit Operation Buddy Check we are still looking for locations wanting to help us support local Veterans. Our peer to peer program is literally just that. We offer an opportunity to just hang out with other Vets and just talk about anything amd everything or if you need to just sit in silence we just want the opportunity for like minded people to be with like minded people. PM us Claus Cares or Veterans Care Project for more information.

In honor of those who have fallen. We were honored yesterday to provide meals to those at the Hampton VA Hospital. Those that sedved our country and are now spending their remaining time as a resident. This great program is the work of Veterans Care Project who saw a need in 2019 and has been providing meals since. Reach out to either of our agencies to see how you can be a part of this movement.
