About the Navy League of the United States, Orange County Council

In Tustin, California, the Navy League of the United States, Orange County Council was founded in 1964. Our mission is to support our nation's Coast Guard, Merchant, Marine Corps, and Navy through nonpartisan efforts; to educate the public about the national security and humanitarian efforts provided by our Sea Services; and to sup

port youth programs like Naval Sea Cadet Corps, Junior ROTC, and Young Marines that introduce young people to the values of our Sea Services. As a council, we are dedicated to supporting the men and women of the Sea Services and their families. Additionally, we provide support to active-duty Navy and Marine units nearby through "adoption" of ships, installations and units, award programs, financial support, and recognition programs. Our “Challenge Coin,” The John Wayne Connection

John Wayne, one of Orange County's most well-known citizens, had a strong affinity for the country. Wayne, a Newport Beach, California resident, became more than just a well-known actor; he became a timeless icon who represented and shared American principles and values. John Wayne, like the Orange County Navy League, was a civilian who supported the armed forces of the United States. From WWII to Vietnam, he was active in the USO. The two highest civilian medals are the official way that the US government acknowledges Wayne's status as an iconic American. After receiving the Congressional Gold Medal on May 26, 1979, President Jimmy Carter posthumously gave Wayne the Presidential Medal of Freedom on June 9, 1980. Additionally, in 1998, the US Navy Memorial Foundation presented him with the Naval Heritage Award in recognition of his support of the Navy and armed forces throughout his cinematic career. Our Council Challenge Coin features a likeness of John Wayne from the bronze statue "The Duke," created by sculptor Robert Summers. Constructed in 1979, the statue is presently situated at Orange County's John Wayne Airport and honors the late actor as a genuine patriot of the United States. John Wayne, a Citizen in Support of the Sea Services, personified the motto of the Navy League.

America’s Tall Ship

Under full sail, the United States Coast Guard Cutter Eagle continues a proud tradition of maritime leadership and seamanship. Serving as the sail training vessel for the United States Coast Guard Academy in New London Connecticut, Eagle provides cadets with hands on experience at sea where future officers learn navigation, teamwork, and leadership.

Built in 1936 and commissioned into the United States Coast Guard in 1946, Eagle remains the only active square rig sailing vessel in United States government service and continues to train the next generation of Coast Guard leaders.

Shipbuilding and the Future of the U.S. Submarine Force

The U.S. Navy is modernizing its submarine fleet to ensure long term national security and readiness at sea.

What is being built
The Navy is developing the Columbia class ballistic missile submarines to replace the aging Ohio class fleet. This program is the Navy’s top shipbuilding priority.

Why it matters
Columbia class submarines provide the sea based leg of the nation’s strategic deterrent. The Navy plans to build twelve submarines to sustain this mission.

Where the program stands
• The first submarine was procured in fiscal year 2021
• The second followed in fiscal year 2024
• Beginning in fiscal year 2026, the Navy plans to produce one submarine per year

The shipbuilding challenge
Columbia class submarines are being built at the same time as Virginia class attack submarines. This places significant demand on the U.S. submarine construction industrial base, including skilled labor, suppliers, and long term funding.

Construction is led by General Dynamics Electric Boat and Huntington Ingalls Industries Newport News Shipbuilding, supported by hundreds of suppliers nationwide.

Oversight and accountability
Congress continues to monitor cost growth, schedule risk, and workforce capacity, as decisions made today directly affect future naval readiness and national security.

As part of its mission, the Navy League of the United States educates the public on issues affecting the sea services. This post is shared solely to support informed discussion on shipbuilding, readiness, and national security.

Discussion encouraged
How should the United States prioritize shipbuilding to ensure long term maritime security?

Tribute to Lieutenant Colonel Youngberg on His Transition from Active Duty

On January 17, the Orange County Navy League was honored to support Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 369 during a squadron event, providing a meal in recognition of Lieutenant Colonel Youngberg’s transition from active duty and decades of dedicated service to the United States Marine Corps.

This opportunity allowed us to show appreciation for active duty service members and their spouses who stand behind the mission every day. Supporting those who serve, along with their families, is central to the work of the Navy League.

Thank you to Burt Olign of the Newport Beach Navy League for the invitation and partnership in making this support possible.

The Navy League of the United States is committed to educating the American public on the importance of the Sea Services while supporting today’s service members and inspiring future generations through programs such as Sea Cadets and Junior ROTC.

It is a privilege to stand alongside those who serve and to strengthen the bond between our communities and the Sea Services.

Honoring Excellence Across the Marine Corps

These moments capture Marines and Sailors recognized at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar for professionalism, leadership, and dedication to mission. While the ceremonies took place earlier this year, the impact of that service continues every day.

Marine Corps Month is a time to reflect not only on history, but on the individuals who carry the mission forward through consistent excellence, teamwork, and commitment. Recognition like this represents the standard our Marines and Sailors uphold long after the applause ends.

As an organization committed to supporting the men and women of the sea services, we are proud to share and recognize moments like these that reflect service, leadership, and integrity in action.

Congratulations to all who were honored, and thank you for your continued service.
