In a groundbreaking study, University of Minnesota Twin Cities researchers have created heart valves that can grow with the recipient. If approved for use, the new valves could reduce the number of lifetime surgeries needed for children with congenital heart defects.

“This is a huge step forward in pediatric heart research,” said senior researcher Robert Tranquillo. Learn more. ➡ https://bit.ly/39vP4oo

Arnold was born with a CHD called Bicuspid Aortic Valve with aortic stenosis, which causes the heart to pump harder than usual to get blood through the aortic valve.

The method the doctors used to fix his aortic valve in the 90s was called a Ross procedure, where you take the person’s native pulmonic valve, move it to the aortic position and then replace the missing pulmonic valve. He had his pulmonary valve replaced via open heart surgery 2 years ago and his aortic valve replaced on Thursday.

The actor and former politician previously underwent open-heart surgery in 2018 to replace a pulmonary valve.

: When I was little, I wanted to grow up to be alive. When I was four, doctors discovered a heart murmur during a routine check up.
Two open-heart surgeries later, I’ve learned to manage what seemed to be a disadvantage.
I am not just a survivor, I am a thriver.
No trauma lasts forever. Scars might remain, but pain is temporary.
Know that you’re not alone when it comes to enduring discomfort. Going through things that are not pleasant is how we grow and embrace change for the better.
Remember, most of your stress comes from the way you respond, not the way life is. Adjust your attitude, and all that extra stress is gone.
Once you take fear out of the equation you start seeing real transformation.

“The goal isn’t to live forever but to create something that will” ~Selena

This past weekend I celebrated #21 years with my new heart! Last year was the first time I shared my story publicly, though as simple as something may sound it was actually very difficult for me. I shared my story not knowing my life would take a totally different direction than the path it was on. From multiple public speaking opportunities (which are now either canceled or rescheduled), to being in “In Full Bloom” campaign, and now starting my own Non profit organization (coming very soon!!). All those years, even to this day, when I question(ed) “why me?” I can now say I’m starting to understand the answer to that. I thank God everyday for blessing me with great health and 21 years post transplant!! It seriously fills my heart and brings a large smile *tears* to my face every time I think about the impact I have and can have on others. I can’t wait to take it to another level through the organization!
I love you all🤍
