Dan Songster, former OCCNPS President, compiled this article from local native plant experts about California native plants that are particularly impressive this year. Read all the tips, tricks and techniques on our blog! Link in bio.

He asked:
With each year being different in our gardens, what native plant has done surprisingly well for you this year?

Question for our July/August 2026 newsletter is: If you could make one wish about what gardening with native plants would be like in a perfect world, what would it be?

🦋 We had a great time at our Container Planting for Butterflies class! We talked about California native plants that help feed butterflies and caterpillars while also giving them shelter and protection. Even a small pot can help support pollinators. 🌿

Thank you to Patty Roess for teaching the class, and to for letting us use their beautiful grounds! 💚

We are monitoring four Western Bluebird boxes as Vera's Gardens thanks to OCCNPS board member Karen Graham's encouragement. This photo was taken today at Vera's and it shows a second clutch of Western Bluebird eggs in one of the four nest boxes. Vera's Gardens is located in Trabuco Canyon. Volunteers have been working for seven years to remove invasive plants and install native plants throughout the 12 acres. The birds and bees are very happy. Thank you OCCNPS! We couldn't have done it without you.

What Is That Plant?! Life As Field Botanists with CNPS

May 21, 2026
ZOOM Presentation
Pre-chat at 6:45pm, Presentation starts at 7pm.

Have you ever wondered what the day-to-day looks like for a field botanist? Field botany is essential for conservation efforts happening across the state. Through field work, we can learn what is happening in the ground to better inform research, conservation, and management practices.
This presentation will focus on the work that revolves around being a field botanist: preparing for the field, conducting surveys, life in the outdoors, as well as a peek into the botanical wonders we get to witness.
