In June 2020, we applied for a grant stipend sponsored through California Fire Safe Council and funded by Southern California Edison (SCE) for the establishment of fire safe council’s in SCE’s service areas. Our application, for the formation of a Fire Safe Council on behalf of the City of Newport Beach was approved in September 2020 and we received $5,000 to begin the process of applying for 501(

c)3 tax status and establishing this nonprofit corporation which will allow us an opportunity to be eligible for state programs and grant funding. Our Fire Safe Council can be used as a forum to share information, solve problems, and link related programs in ways that can save money and time. The public safety issues we discuss may extend beyond fire safety, to earthquake preparedness, emergency medical response and more.

June 16, 2021 - Multiple brush fires scorched about 8 acres along the southbound San Joaquin Hills (73) Toll Road west of Laguna Canyon Road Wednesday afternoon, forcing the closure of the toll lanes and a nearby wilderness park.

Multi-agency response. Engines, dozers, hand crews, rotary wing and fixed wing on scene. Firefighters making aggressive attack.
The fires were reported at 3:03 p.m., and by 5:30 p.m., crews had stopped the forward progress of the blazes.

Thankful for Orange County Fire Authority and Newport Beach Fire Department for their swift action keeping the Community safe!

WILDFIRE MITIGATION & GRANT FUNDING-

You may have seen the news in recent weeks about Governor Newsom's budget proposal to pump $1B into wildfire mitigation and home hardening. $323M of this was proposed for Early Action Funding, which would make it available this spring, so it could be used before the next fire season — it looks like our legislators are hesitating on approving this. The Budget Committee is considering this imminently.

Here's how you can help: Go to NCFF's Legislative Action site and send a letter to your state representatives. It's easy, just enter your name and address (so the system can select our representatives), enter Newport Beach Fire Safe Council and add any information you want about the recent fires in your area and add the kind of projects that need to be implemented for our Communities such as deforestation, homeowner awareness and education on home hardening and emergency evacuation and shelter in place planning.

So please, follow the link and send your emails (they often just count the quantity of letters, so don't stress too much over what you add). And then share this email with everyone you know in California. The more legislators contacted, the more impact we will have.
