On April 21, several employees received a “Life Save Award” during the Board of Commissioners meeting for their quick and coordinated response to a medical emergency involving a coworker that occurred in January.

From the initial 911 call to EMS arrival and transport to the hospital, Alan Smith (Parks & Recreation), Karen Beatenbough (Parks & Recreation), Shelly White (911/EMA), Kayla Turner (911/EMA), Creighton Smith (Fire Rescue), Patrick Anderson (Fire Rescue), Taylor Nelms (Fire Rescue), and William Caswell (Fire Rescue) worked together to help save Event Services Director Tray Baggarly, who was suffering from a heart attack. The “Life Save Award” recognizes their teamwork, quick thinking and use of lifesaving techniques, such as CPR and use of an AED, during that incident.

In addition, Alan Smith, a current employee and retired firefighter, received the Piedmont Community Hero Award for his quick actions to render CPR until EMS arrived at the scene and took over.

We are deeply grateful for each of these individuals - their courage, rapid response, and commitment helped save Tray’s life. Please join us in recognizing and thanking these employees for their extraordinary actions that day.

When you call out mediocrity and complacency, you’re not just challenging behaviors; you’re challenging comfort. And people will defend comfort at all costs.

They’ll question your motives, twist your words, and try to make you the problem. Not because you’re wrong, but because your standard exposes what they’ve chosen to tolerate.

Standing for something real will always make you a target for those who would rather stay where they are.

You’ll feel it too. The missed opportunities. The closed doors. The quiet distancing. Opportunities that seem to pass you by because you refused to play the game the way others do.

But understand this, those were never your opportunities to begin with. Anything that requires you to water yourself down, to stay quiet when you should speak, or to blend comes at a cost that’s too high.

Because the real loss isn’t missing out on approval, it’s losing respect for yourself. It’s looking in the mirror, knowing you traded your standards for acceptance.

That you stayed silent when you should’ve spoken.

That you chose comfort over conviction.

That kind of compromise doesn’t just go away; it sits with you, weighs on you, and, over time, erodes who you are.

So speak up anyway. Stand anyway. Hold the line anyway.

Because while criticism is loud, regret is permanent. And there is nothing more peaceful than knowing you stayed true to who you are, regardless of what it costs you.

🚨 Action Needed: Support SB 143 🚨

The Georgia State Firefighters Association is proud to support Senate Bill 143, a critical step toward improving retirement flexibility and strengthening the future of our fire service.

SB 143 will help:
✔️ Provide more realistic retirement options for firefighters
✔️ Allow experienced firefighters to remain in or return to service
✔️ Support recruitment and retention across Georgia

This bill has already passed the Senate with strong bipartisan support, and now it’s time for us to help push it forward.

📣 We need your voice!
Please take a few minutes to reach out to Retirement Committee members and encourage them to support SB 143.

⏰ A subcommittee meeting may take place this Tuesday from 2:00–4:00 PM at the Coverdell Building (pending final confirmation). Your outreach before then can make a real impact.

Together, we can ensure Georgia’s firefighters receive the support and retirement security they deserve.
