Brown's Mill Battlefield Association

Brown's Mill Battlefield Association This site is dedicated to the Confederate and Union cavalrymen who fought and died here on July 30, 1864, and to the medical staff who tended the wounded.

The Brown's Mill Battlefield Association supports this historic site that opened almost 149 years to the day that Union Soldiers under General Edward M. McCook, marching from Atlanta toward Macon, were defeated by General Joseph Wheeler's Confederate cavalry which had ridden south from Decatur. "Fightin' Joe" Wheeler's relentless pursuit of the raiders virtually destroyed Sherman's cavalry and kep

t Atlanta's vital supply lines open. But more than that, the Battle of Brown's Mill changed the course of the Atlanta campaign. It forced Sherman to abandon his efforts to use cavalry to cut Atlanta's railroads and compelled him to begin a lengthy siege, the very thing he had hoped to avoid.

We had our last kids' metal detecting class yesterday afternoon beginning at 6:00pm. Man was it hot!! 99 reading on my car dashboard. We only lasted an hour, instead of 2 hours. They were a great bunch and found lots of treasures.
Today is our last class for the summer. It is for adults. We may only be there for 15 minutes!!!😂😂 Just kidding, but probably not so long as yesterday. We have to be really careful in this heat.

April is Confederate History Month. To honor the memory of those wounded who died in hospitals in Newnan during the War Between the States and who were buried in Oakhill Cemetery, the Brown's Mill Battlefield Association puts our Flags and Lights in the Confederate Section. This is a drive-through event (after dark if you want to see the lights glowing).
The event sponsored by the local SCV Camps and BMBA will begin at 7:00p.m.
Come and join us to help put out flags and luminaries this afternoon, to enjoy the speeches tonight, or to wait with us to watch the lights shine to remind us of our history.

Today is the 158th anniversary of The Battle of Brown's Mill. It seems appropriate to post a picture of Joe Wheeler's statue from the Hall of Congress in Washington, DC. He was known as "Fightin Joe Wheeler".
Thanks for the photo Lee Gilley.
