We had the pleasure of climbing, rappelling and traversing across the Linville Gorge with an excellent crew from "the island" (IYKYK) this past week. Many fears and doubts were shattered through teamwork and mountaineering. We are honored to connect with the best and achieve personal growth through ecotherapy!

Rock climbing with families is a special experience. The connection between loved ones as they protect and guide one another whilst focusing on difficult objectives is invaluable. Life is tough, and developing the skills to deal with difficult things together is critical in today's society. Joshua Tree National Park has many unique rock formations due to its geological history and intense climate. The California desert provides an excellent classroom for servicemembers and their families to discover and access the therapeutic effects of outdoor rock climbing. Here, OWG demonstrates how to climb safely before families engage in an awesome weekend of outdoor activity!

The Yosemite Decimal System was created at Tahquitz Peak in Southern California. This was first documented in the rock climbing section of the Angeles chapter of the Sierra Club's newsletter in the 1950's. The original intention was that the hardest free climb possible would be rated at 5.9, with 6.0 requiring aid techniques.

As time has passed and technology has progressed, the YDS has become a subjective system in which climbers attempt to honor the original grade from the first ascenders, but also understand that modern climbers have expanded the system up to 5.15d and it is good practice to advertise realistic grades for climbers new to an area.

Because of this gray area, some older routes in the United States can be graded at lower numbers than their perceived difficulty by modern climbers. Some folks will refer to this type of route as one that is "sandbagged".

Kicking off the North Carolina season with an outstanding crew!

Despite all members being new to rock climbing, this group pushed past numerous perceived mental, physical and emotional limits and were a true pleasure to mountaineer with. They walk away with the ability to self-apply ecotherapy in their own lives, and with connections that go beyond the service. We are grateful for the incredible week together in the best place!
