Linville-Central Rescue Squad Linville-Central is a private, all-volunteer, non-profit rescue squad serving all of Avery County, North Carolina, operating for over forty years.

An all-volunteer organization responding to medical emergencies and traumatic injuries in Avery County, NC, and providing technical mountain rescue, K9 search and recovery, and swift water rescue services to agencies across western North Carolina. We're a close-knit family of state certified rescue technicians, EMTs, paramedics, and caring people devoted to delivering quality, effective, and free

rescue services to our community on a volunteer basis. Typical calls are for motor vehicle collisions, farm and work-related accidents, medical emergencies, wilderness and mountain rescues, searches for lost or missing persons, and medical standby at public events. We respond to emergency medical calls as first responders and to assist county EMS, provide backup ambulance services for the county, and provide rescue assistance to fire departments in their functions. Our K9 Search and Rescue Task Group provides volunteer search dog teams to law enforcement, fire, rescue, and emergency management agencies in North Carolina and surrounding states. Please consider helping us as we aid others in our mountain community. Remember, dial 911 in case of an emergency! Linville Central Rescue Squad, Inc.

On Friday, May 29, agencies in the area of the Watauga River on the west side of Beech Mountain responded to assist a local man that had fallen off a cliff into the river. The individual had taken some serious injuries when he fell. Officers from Beech Mountain PD were able to access the patient on the far side of the Watauga River. As other units arrived, a plan to stabilize the patient and successfully extricate them came into focus. A high line was built and used to get the patient to the east side of the river. Avery EMS took over patient care and transported the patient to to Fall Creek VFD Station 2, where they met a medi-evac helicopter from Baptist Hospital in Winston Salem. Units responding included Linville-Central Rescue Squad, Avery EMS, FallCreek VFD,Cove Creek VFD, Avery County Sheriffs Office, Watauga Emergency Management, Avery Emergency Management , Beech Mtn PD and NC SHP

Late Thursday afternoon Linville-Central Rescue Squad and Linville Volunteer Fire Department were notified by Avery County 911 Communications of a cow who had escaped her pasture and, during her adventures, had gotten stuck in mud. Avery County Livestock agent, Michelle Cuthbertson South , accompanied us to the call and provided guidance to avoid injury to our "patient" while getting her back to solid ground. While this was not our typical rescue scenario, everyone pulled together(literally) to get the cow out of her predicament and back to greener pasture.

P-SAR Tip of the Week: Before You Go, Leave a Plan

A simple trip plan can make a big difference if something goes wrong outdoors.

Before you head into the woods, onto the trail, to the river, or out for a quick walk in a remote area, take a minute to tell someone:

Where you are going
Who is with you
When you expect to return
When they should call for help if they do not hear from you

Cell phones are helpful, but they are not a plan. Batteries die, service drops, and small problems can turn serious quickly.

Leaving a plan gives search and rescue teams a starting point and can help us find you faster.

Be prepared. Be informed. Be found.

Linville-Central Rescue is always trying to better ourselves and our ability to respond to assist the people of Avery County and those that visit our community. For the last three years in a row, our members have recorded well over 7,000 training hours in a wide variety of subjects. These can include wilderness SAR, mountain rescue, vehicle extrication, incident command, traffic management, tactical medical skills, heavy extrication, and the list goes on. We don’t just train for what has happened but accidents and disasters that might happen in the future.

Earlier today we were dispatched to Pisgah National Forest for a subject that had taken an unintended slide down a low-angle waterfall, sustaining multiple injuries. The patient was stabilized and packaged in the litter, then raised back up the waterfall's edge and carried to the waiting ambulance. It was great to work alongside our partner agencies for such a seamless and efficient rescue. We would like to thank all involved and wish a speedy recovery to the patient!
