🎄 Calling All Lisbon Residents! 🎄

The Lisbon Historical Society is getting ready to spread some holiday cheer at the new gazebo — and we need your help!

We’re looking for a 6–7 foot lighted artificial holiday tree and some weatherproof decorations to make the space shine bright for the season!

If you have a tree or decorations you’d like to donate, please message us here.

Let’s make the gazebo a festive centerpiece for our community this holiday season.

Blue Iris and Peony Fundraiser Sale

Saturday October 4
10 am - 12 noon
Newent Meeting House, Lisbon Ct.

We're replanting and enlarging one of the garden beds at the former Newent Congregational Church and in the process uncovered many iris and peonies that have been growing here for generations. In the spring the iris are a lovely pale blue and extremely fragrant! The peonies are pure white. Some will be replanted, but the extra will be available through our iris and peony fundraising sale. We'd love to share them with you! Stop by and purchase a bag of 2-3 plants for $10.00.

The town of Lisbon, Connecticut, the most southerly community on eastern Connecticut’s Scenic-Byway, has three memorials commemorating the men and women who served their country during war. Memorials honoring Revolutionary War veterans and another honoring all vets are situated on the town hall lawn. The third is an “honor roll” memorial located on the Newent Meeting House lawn on the easterly side of South Burnham Highway. Erected in 1931, the honor roll lists the “The Men of Lisbon Who Served Their Country In the World War, 1917-1918.” Although the participants in the war-to-end-all-wars may fade into history, these men are still connected to our community by way of their descendants and by the roads and places that bear their names. Their surnames attest to a community of diverse ancestry, whose citizens rallied to serve and sacrifice for their country as one.

All three sites are located in the center of town at the intersection of Routes 169 and 138. Parking is available at the Lisbon town hall and the Meeting House.

Election Day is rapidly approaching and the Lisbon Historical Society intends to make an old-fashioned festival out of it.

In the 1700’s Election Day was an important holiday and a time for cake. Voters would take the day off from work and travel to Hartford, cast votes, party into the night and eat cake.

These cakes were baked to celebrate Election Day as early as 1771 in Connecticut. The General Assembly even reimbursed one Ezekial Williams for the ingredients of an Election Cake and a huge cake was made for the Governor’s Foot Guard in 1775.

So, in keeping with tradition, the John Bishop House will be open Tuesday November 5, at noon. We invite all members of the community to stop over after voting for a piece of Election Cake.
