A number of community members gathered over the issue of food insecurity in the Newell community. “Food insecurity” is the situation where people are unsure where their next meal will come from. The food pantry of Storm Lake reports that as many as 77 Newell families have used the food pantry there in a month. More than 50% of the children in the Newell/Fonda school receive assistance for their

lunches. These figures have indicated a need for a local food pantry, especially for those who are unable to put food on the table. A group of concerned citizens began to work in August on the possibility of opening a pantry in Newell. Loring Hospital (in Sac City) offered the use of the old UnityPoint clinic building on the corner of 2nd Street and Fulton. A $1000 grant for food from Farm Credit Services of America kicked the project off to a good start. The food pantry committee is hoping to make the pantry a community effort. They are actively seeking help from anyone who would like to join the committee. The task to start up a food pantry can be overwhelming at times; the more hands to share the work the better. The Newell Food Pantry is a faith-based organization, finding its motivation in the mandate from God to feed the hungry and care for children. Studies find that children who are well-nourished do better in school and become more-involved community members. The benefit to the community extends into the future through feeding families now. Donations of cash can be made at the First Community Bank in Newell, or through any committee member. Donations of cash or food can be made at your church or in the drop box outside the food pantry west side of building or by calling to arrange a drop off. Thanks for your help!
