American history does not merely pass near the Adirondacks. At some of its most consequential moments, it runs directly through these mountains.
On September 13, 1901, Theodore Roosevelt was descending Mount Marcy when word arrived that President William McKinley was failing. What followed was a dangerous overnight journey through Tahawus, Newcomb and Aiden Lair toward the North Creek train station.
By morning, Roosevelt was president of the United States.
One hundred twenty-five years later, that extraordinary Adirondack story is taking center stage again.
Joe Wiegand, founder of The Teddy Roosevelt Show and the world’s premier TR reprisor, returns to ADK Talks with Newcomb TR Weekend Chair Mary Monaghan. Together, they retrace the Night Ride and take us inside September’s anniversary celebration—including the inauguration reenactment, the guided recreation of Roosevelt’s route and the Adirondack community preserving this history.
It is a story about far more than one president. It is about citizenship, service, conservation and the night the Adirondacks helped change America.
