Great Camp Santanoni

Great Camp Santanoni Camp Santanoni, a National Historic Landmark, is one of the great treasures of the Adirondacks.

The Friends of Camp Santanoni, who manages this page, operates under the auspices of Adirondack Architectural Heritage (AARCH). Santanoni was built for Robert and Anna Pruyn of Albany beginning in 1892. The estate eventually included 12,900 acres and nearly four-dozen buildings. Since 1972 the Santanoni Preserve has been owned by New York State. It is on the National Register of Historic Places, a

nd is a National Historic Landmark. AARCH has long been associated with the protection, interpretation and restoration of this regional treasure. How YOU Can Help:
In 1997, AARCH helped to create the Friends of Camp Santanoni, in order to provide long-term financial and volunteer support for conservation, interpretation, and public use of Camp Santanoni. The Friends is a partnership of non-profit organizations, the Town of Newcomb, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, and the thousands of people who love this special place and believe in its preservation and use for public education, recreation, and inspiration. The Friends of Camp Santanoni operates under the auspices of Adirondack Architectural Heritage (AARCH) through an "Adopt-a-Natural Resource" Agreement with NYSDEC. Members of the Friends of Camp Santanoni:
*Provide financial support for the preservation and interpretation of Camp Santanoni
*Are invited to be part of volunteer work projects at the camp
*Receive discounts on Santanoni publications and merchandise
*Attend special Friends events free
*Receive the Friends newsletter

We're excited to start another summer at Great Camp Santanoni but we need your help!

Join us next Friday, June 12, at our annual Opening Camp volunteer day. We'll meet at the upper parking lot at 9:30 a.m. and then venture to each building complex, where we'll get the historic area ready to greet our visiting public this summer.

Now's the time! Join Guide Charlotte Demers on Sunday, May 24 for a spring wildflower hike. Take a leisurely one-mile hike to the Santanoni Farm, where you'll learn to identify a variety of seasonal blooms, and find out more about their cultural and natural history.

Participants should bring insect repellent, water, snacks, and appropriate footwear/clothing for a two-mile round trip hike. Meet in the upper parking lot at 10 a.m.

Want to take a hike through history?

Join Volunteer Docent Laura Baker next Sunday, May 17 for a guided journey through a portion of the Santanoni Preserve. Learn how the Pruyns developed their Preserve with a goal of conservation and self-sufficiency, and how these ideals are reflected in the Adirondack Park -- just in time for the Park's 134th anniversary.

This free guided hike will begin at 10 a.m. at the Gate Lodge, and include a one-mile hike to the Farm. Wear clothes and shoes that are suitable for a two-mile roundtrip hike and bring plenty of water.

Get a glimpse of a few of these species during a guided bird walk next Friday, May 8, with Newcomb Guide Charlotte Demers.

Participants will meet at the upper parking lot at 10 a.m. for a one mile walk to the Farm Complex. Bring insect repellant, water and appropriate footwear and clothing for a two-mile roundtrip hike.
