Oklahoma Small Animal Response Team

Oklahoma Small Animal Response Team The Small Animal Response Team for the State of Oklahoma geared for disaster responses.

Oklahoma SmART is a 501 (c)(3) formed as a successor for the State Animal Response Team (SART). It consists of volunteer veterinarians, veterinary technicians, animal professionals, and other volunteers interested in companion animals and animal related issues in a disaster. The mission is centered on small animal/companion animal response which includes small/companion animal emergency triage and

sheltering during and after declared disasters. WE ARE NOT A RESCUE ORGANIZATION FOR INDIVIDUAL ANIMALS, but are activated through emergency management as part of the Medical Reserve Corps. Our goal is to have trained members in all regions of Oklahoma in order to better respond locally.

June is Pet Preparedness Month! 🐶🐈

When severe weather strikes, your pets depend on you to keep them safe. Start building your pet’s emergency plan today. Start with the basics: a leash, carrier, food, water, meds, and a backup caregiver who knows your pet’s routine.

Take a few minutes to think through:

🐾 Where your pets will go during severe weather
🐾 How you’ll transport them quickly if you need to evacuate
🐾 A bag of supplies your pets will need for several days

Having a pet preparedness plan now can help reduce stress and confusion when emergencies happen. You should also keep printed copies in your go-bag with vaccination records, microchip info, feeding instructions, and a recent photo of you with your pet.

There has been some confusion and volunteers are missing opportunities with the Oklahoma Medical Reserve Corps (OKMRC). I noticed this especially as people are trying to sign up for training courses, so I am making this post for clarification.

After signing up for the OKMRC on their website, the next steps to becoming a full volunteer are:

Completion of the following courses within one year of joining the OKMRC.
All required courses are available in the Online Training of the OKMRC Website.
• OKMRC Orientation
• Family First: Making a Family Emergency Plan
• FEMA IS-100a Incident Command System (ICS)
• FEMA IS-700b National Incident Management System (NIMS)

Please log on at least yearly to keep your name active and your email correct.

If you want to join the large animal or small animal team, then select those boxes under skills.

Our display at the Annual Medieval Fair in Norman April 9-11. We had lots of visitors and interest in our team. We had a number of people make donations to our organization so THANKS to them. Remember, we are a 501 C3 so deductions are tax deductible, and don't forget to ask for matching contributions from your job if they offer that. Our team always welcomes any financial assistance we can get to help complete our missions.

Thanks especially to all our volunteers who staffed, set up, and helped out, especially David Grizzle and Sandra Doan.

The Animal Decontamination Course is nearly here! Saturday, April 25, 2026 in Stillwater, OK at the College of Veterinary Medicine. Get signed up on okmrc.org now. https://www.okmrc.org/volunteers/training/class.cfm?id=2112

Eric Thompson, the Executive Director of Disaster and Field Response of Animal Incident Management group and Senior Director at ASAR Training and Response as well as the Past President of NASAAEP will be the course instructor and evaluator.

Class starts at 9 am with registration beginning at 8:30am. Course work in the morning at the lecture hall, with the field exercise in the afternoon at the adjacent arena. Students will be applying the skills they just learned to include setting up and breaking down a decontamination area. This will include things like use of zones, moving animals through the process, assessing effective decontamination, PPE, and handling intake, discharge, and MUCH more. Both dogs and horses will be available for the live portion for real world hands-on experience. There will be a hot wash immediately afterward, so expect to finish around 4:30pm to 5 pm depending on animal cooperation.
