1st Lt. Derek Hines Soldiers Assistance Fund Derek Hines was born on July 9, 1980 and died on September 1, 2005 in Baylough, Afghanistan. Derek's family set up the 1st Lt.

The 1st Lieutenant Derek Hines Soldiers Assistance fund intends to provide financial assistance for Massachusetts’s soldiers, and their families, who have incurred serious, career ending, and life altering injuries while on active duty. His unit was conducting security operations and came under attack by enemy forces using small arms fire. Even after he had been fatally shot, 1LT Hines continued to fire at the insurgents. Derek was a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point where he flourished both academically and as a hockey player. He was named captain his senior year and in 2007 he was awarded the NCAA Award of Valor. Derek Hines Soldiers Assitance Fund in 2007 to give back to those putting their lives in danger for the United States.

21 years today and your memory still lives on in so many ways. They say time heals, but time simply teaches you how to live with the loss, how to smile through the memories, and how to carry someone with you every day.

This past Wednesday, Trevor Hines had the honor of meeting with the team from at their Amesbury location to accept a donation of more than $22,000 in support of the 1st Lt. Derek Hines Soldiers Assistance Foundation.

CNA, a local veteran-owned business, selects a “Charity of the Month” to support through fundraising efforts. We were incredibly honored to be chosen for a second time this past June.

With this latest contribution, CNA has now donated more than $35,000 to our foundation. Their generosity will have a meaningful impact on the service members and military families we are privileged to support.

We are deeply grateful not only for CNA’s commitment to our mission, but also for the remarkable difference they continue to make throughout our community. Through this outstanding program, they have donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to nonprofit organizations, strengthening countless causes and changing lives along the way.

Race Information & FAQ

PACKET PICK UP | Race participants are welcome to pick up their packet on Friday, June 12th from 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm, or Saturday, June 13th from 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm. If able, we highly encourage coming on Friday to get your bib to save time on race day.

NO ON SITE REGISTRATION | There will be no onsite registration. Participants who have not registered will be asked to register on their phone before picking up their bib. If you have not signed up already, please visit FLAGDAY5K.COM and register prior to arriving at packet pick up.

PARKING | Parking is available at 202 Merrimac Street.

PETS & STROLLERS | Pets are allowed to run the course, but are not allowed on the field pre or post race. We appreciate your understanding so we can keep the fields in perfect condition for the local teams. Strollers are welcome. If you are running or walking with a stroller, we ask you line up towards the back of the start line to give others space to start.

KIDS FUN RUN | The Kids Fun Run is a short run around the perimeter of the soccer field. It is free to enter and all kids are welcome. Please plan to be at the field prior to 3:00 pm if you would like your kid to participate to ensure we have a timely start.
