Based in Newbury, Ohio, CHMK operates as a leading retreat center and summer camp serving the T1D community and beyond. Located on 72+ beautiful wooded acres in Newbury, OH (25 miles east of Cleveland), Camp Ho Mita Koda serves as home to more than 320 campers each summer and 1000 participants per year. Campers learn lifelong diabetes management skills in a fun, interactive, and age-appropriate setting. Our lifestyle enhancing programs empower campers to manage their diabetes, make healthy choices, take personal responsibility, and build self-esteem, friendships, and a life-long support network. Around-the-clock supervision is provided by experienced, licensed physicians and nurses from northeast Ohio's top-ranked medical institutions. Camp Ho Mita Koda's resident camp is proud to be accredited by the American Camp Association and a member of the Diabetes Education and Camping Association.

Last week, we brought a little Camp Ho Mita Koda spirit to the Alliance Lions Club!

Thank you to the Alliance Lions Club for inviting us to speak at your October meeting. We loved the opportunity to share what makes camp special and how the generosity of the Alliance Lions Club, along with support from a Lions Clubs International Foundation grant, is making a lasting impact on our campers and our camp community.

The best part? We brought one of our very own campers, Charli, along to share her story! There’s nothing quite like hearing firsthand what camp means to a camper. Charli reminded us that Ho Mita Koda is a place where kids can be themselves, build confidence, and find friends who just get it.

A huge THANK YOU to two amazing volunteer groups who helped bring this year’s Fall Fest to life!

Duramax Marine joined us on Thursday for an employee volunteer day, helping us get the grounds ready and set the stage for a fun-filled fall day at camp.

Boy Scouts Troop 195 jumped in during the event, helping park cars, fish pumpkins out of the lake, assist with archery, and so much more!

Thank you all for helping to make this year's event a success!

TWO DAYS UNTIL FALL FEST! 🎃🍂

Fall Fest at Camp Ho Mita Koda is almost here! Join us this Saturday, October 17, from 12–4 PM for an afternoon packed with fall fun for the whole family.

Here’s just a little of what you can look forward to:

- Pumpkin launching, painting, and carving
- Archery and tomahawk throwing
- Hayrides and a scavenger hunt
- Jungle Bob
- Gem and stone sifting at the Sluice
- A balloon artist
- Face painting, a jumping pillow, bounce house, and more!

Grab some food from Eat at the Bus Stop Food Truck, check out our Diabetes Community Vendors, and enjoy a beautiful fall afternoon at camp!

Admission is just $7 per person, and all proceeds support Camp Ho Mita Koda’s mission of providing camp experiences for children living with Type 1 Diabetes.

We are incredibly grateful to the Blue Knights of Ohio Chapter XII for once again donating the proceeds from their 2026 raffle to support camp. They raised an amazing $2,500 this year!

Camper Alumni and volunteer Avery B. attended their raffle drawing celebration to receive the check and share more about the impact of camp's programming.

As a small non-profit, community donations like this make a big difference in our mission. We cannot thank the Blue Knights enough!

A little camp history, a lot of hard work, and a whole new look for Hippo Cabin!

Swipe through to see the transformation! Our Facilities Assistant, Jason Brown, along with volunteers Bruce Christman and Gary Barnhart, worked tirelessly to complete the renovations in house.

The renovation also gave us a chance to preserve some special pieces of CHMK history. Camp founder Betty John handpainted the beams inside the cabin, which were carefully removed and repurposed as crown molding.

Two paintings found on the backs of closet doors were also preserved in shadow boxes and hung in the entry. They were created by Lee Ann Larson Emanuel, who spent the summers of 1971 and 1972 at camp as an assistant and waterfront director, alternate girls’ counselor and songleader. One of her paintings features a hippo, the inspiration behind the cabin’s name!

We love seeing this historic cabin refreshed while keeping the stories and memories that make CHMK so special. Hippo Cabin is used as housing for our night medical staff. Now they have a comfortable, quiet place to sleep the day away so they can care for our campers all night!

As the leaves start to change colors here at CHMK, we can’t help but find ourselves dreaming about summer camp!

Behind every campfire, cardboard boat, and unforgettable week at camp is a community of people who help make it all possible. We’re so grateful to our 2026 Annual Sponsors for helping bring summer to life at Camp Ho Mita Koda!

Their support helped us provide camp food, program supplies, medical supplies and so much more for the 278 kids who joined us for T1D Summer Camp this year.

And the best part? Our post camp surveys are in, and 97% of families said they would highly recommend CHMK to other families living with Type 1 Diabetes.

Fall Fest is right around the corner!

Join us at Camp Ho Mita Koda on Saturday, October 17 from 12–4 PM for an afternoon of fall fun for the whole family.

We have a lot planned this year, including pumpkin launching, pumpkin archery and tomahawk throwing, hayrides, a scavenger hunt, pumpkin decorating and carving, face painting, balloon art, Jungle Bob, a pumpkin patch, gem sluice, the jumping pillow, bounce house, and more!

There will also be food available from Eat at the Bus Stop.

Admission is $7 per person, and all proceeds go toward supporting Camp Ho Mita Koda and our mission of providing camp experiences for children living with Type 1 Diabetes.

We ended the T1D Camp season on a high with our latest installment of Family Camp! With many first-time attendees, kids and adults alike made the most of the opportunity to gain a community who understands the highs and lows of T1D. Participants enjoyed staff-led campfires, yoga, swimming, boating, rock climbing, archery, axe throwing, and so much more! Here are some comments from this year's Family Camp participants:

"I love that my children make friends so quickly at Camp, no one bats an eye at all the beeping. The kids seem to have more freedom here and feel comfortable to wander around with new friends and us parents can feel safe that they will be okay to do that. Everyone has low snacks nearby!"

"I loved being with other parents who get it; learning from their experience and sharing ours too!"

"My favorite part of family camp is being on the lake with my boys and seeing them interact with other children in lieu of a screen. I also love the adults Happy Hour!"

Thank you to our friends at Novo Nordisk for spending a day volunteering here at Camp!

They rolled up their sleeves and got right to work deep cleaning our cabins and giving Doctor's Cabin a much-needed fresh coat of paint. CHMK has a small year-round staff and volunteer groups like these help keep our facilities looking great.
