Guest Speaker Reverend Dr. Kenneth Sampson
7:30pm on Friday, May 8, 2026
On February 3, 1943, four United States Army Chaplains—George L. Fox (Methodist), Alexander D. Goode (Reform Jewish), Clark V. Poling (Dutch Reformed), and John P. Washington (Catholic)—died heroically when the USAT Dorchester, a troop transport on which they were serving, was torpedoed by a German U-boat in the North Atlantic. The four chaplains calmed struggling soldiers, guided them to life rafts, and when life jackets ran out, they famously gave their own life jackets to soldiers and were last seen holding hands and praying as their ship slid under the waters. Of the 902 soldiers on board the Dorchester, only 230 survived.
Moreover, at Erev Shabbat Services on Friday, May 8, Temple Beth Jacob will host Colonel Ken Sampson, US Army Chaplain, Ret., to present a certificate of merit and a piece of art from the Chapel of the Four Chaplains to the Temple, to recognize the continuing line of service which our community long appreciates. All are lovingly invited to attend.
