For those of you who don’t know, or can’t tell by the things that I post, I am a proud home cook and a conservationist. I’ve worked for several years on a couple of projects that are now coming to fruition.

I have posted about this before, but I am now selling my own spice blend. It’s an all-purpose blend that is delicious on just about anything. It sells for $10.00 for 4 ounces. I also have a pretty decorative bottle that sells for $12.00. It’s a great gift idea!

And now for every container I sell, I will be contributing $1.00 towards planting a tree in the conservation project I’ve been working on for years!

For those of you who have tried it, please share with me your thoughts - I’d love to hear it!

I am in the South Carolina/Georgia area for my daughter’s graduation from college, sitting outside on the deck of our rental unit overlooking a tidal wetlands and listening to the birds. I am reminded of how beautifully nature is balanced and how much our lives ebb and flow just as the tides ebb and flow through the marshland.

The ability nature holds to ground, cleanse, heal and restore us all is something to be cherished and protected. In my next post, I am going to discuss balanced wetland systems and mosquitoes. Right now, I’m going to try to soak all this beauty in!

I could not have imagined the positive response I have received to this project’s mission. What a blessing!

Today I was interviewed by Eyewitness News which aired tonight.

My friend Joe, who is a nature conservation extraordinaire, was kind enough to share my original post. He received several comments and questions regarding the wetlands project. Someone asked him, “isn’t a wetland just a swamp?”

Great question. And a good place to start a conversation about wetlands and their importance! The short answer is yes. A swamp is a wetlands. But so is a river, lake, bog, mangrove, marsh, pond, fen, to name a few. It is land that is either covered by water or saturated with water. Wetlands are usually fed by groundwater and underground springs.

Most people think of wetlands as a wildlife habitat. And that is a very important function of a wetland. However, a wetland is much more! Wetlands help control flooding and erosion, recharge groundwater, clean surface water, provide a resting ground for migratory birds, help preserve endangered species, provide a habitat for pollinator plants, and provide a habitat for a variety of animals and birds!

How exciting that so many of you took the time to look at my new page and are supportive of the project! Peggy Forbes directed me to look up the story of Goose Pond in Linton, Indiana. I’m including the short video from their website. WOW is all I can say. What a beautiful place. Thanks Peggy.

It’s a good thing I have friends……I purchased the land in 2010. Hold all jokes please! 🤦. I have corrected the original post.

Back in 2010 I purchased a tract of land near my home in Newburgh, Indiana for personal reasons. Going through a stressful time in my life I needed a place to go where I could breathe, where I could calm the outside noise and be at peace. Nature had always been able to provide me with a sense of calm, so I set out to find a little piece of land where I could work and create. I wanted four acres but somehow I ended up with around 61 acres. At the time, the acreage was in a somewhat rural location. Today, that same land is surrounded by progress - homes, a park and much more traffic. I am not complaining.

Progress is great for the community. We have been given much - a beautiful park, trails and an awesome place to live. However, progress comes with its own set of challenges. It puts pressure on the infrastructure - the roads, schools and utilities. In addition, it puts pressure on nature. The natural landscape - plant and animal life, air and water pathways.

As with all things in life balance is key! Thankfully, my personal life is now more balanced. And as I move forward, I would like to give something back to the land that provided me with so much.

For the last few years I have been working on a project that has been a labor of love and patience, with an emphasis on patience. However, I am excited to announce that I have received my approvals to turn my land into a wetlands restoration and conservation area that will remain an integral part of the natural landscape for perpetuity!

Sage Winds Wetlands Mitigation Bank is designed to preserve and re-establish wetlands that have been affected in our watershed by progress, thereby helping to restore balance between the two.

I will go into more detail about the importance of wetlands, how a wetlands bank works and the progress of this wetlands bank in future posts! I hope you will come back to visit!
